Reasons Why Nigerians Love iPhones

 I've often heard the saying that "there are two phones in the world, iPhones and others". In Nigeria, most people are crazy about iPhones for different reasons, and surprisingly many don't even know why they love the iPhone, and many have never owned one.

I wrote an article earlier about "why i would prefer the S5 over the iPhone 6". In that article i listed a number of reasons why using a Samsung Android smartphone is more beneficial than using an iPhone. Here are some of the main reasons i don't like the iPhone. Firstly, iPhones are too expensive, especially in regions like Nigeria. Secondly, the iOS is a locked operating system which gives no room for app developers to develop new apps. Thirdly, on iPhone you vitually have to pay most apps, unlike Android were you can download lots of free apps from the Google play store. Lastly, the iPhone comes with an inbuilt battery that can only be replaced by an iPhone technician, which would cost you time and money.

Despite these reasons most Nigerians seem to tout the iPhone as the best phone on Earth, and tend to give respect to people who own them as compared to using any other phone. This phenomenon prompted me to take a survey on "why do Nigerians love iPhones?"

This survey was carried out on friends on my Facebook and my contacts on BBM. Though the sample size is relatively small, i was able to get an insight as to why Nigerians love/adore the iPhone. Here are some of the reasons:

1. Status

It is a common thing in Nigeria and in other developing countries to be evaluated with what you own and how you appear, so it is common to see people trying to impress with luxury possessions such as cars and phones. From the response i got, this seem to be the major factor -Status. One of my sources expressed that;

"....why would i use a phone that no one would respect me for? as i speak i am saving for the new iPhone 6" Amaka

Another source, Pedro, stated that "iPhone is for the big boys....i cant use any other phone"

From the response it could be inferred that Nigerians love the iPhone because they want to upgrade their status and feel accepted among the upper class in the society.

2. Design

Another reason people love the iPhone is the design. According to Arinze "The iPhone is sleek, classy, durable, and superior in finishing.....i will go for the iPhone anytime, anyday". Others also expressed that Apple is an American Company, and since the US are known for good quality, they trust the quality of the iPhone as compared to Samsung which is a Korean company. In line with this thought, Victor Stated that "the iPhone series is made by the US with no imitations while Samsung is a Korean company in which ther's likeliness of look-alike of imitation Samsung phones".

3. Security

The iPhone is known for it's rigid iOS operating system, though app developers and hackers frown at the locked system of the iPhone, Apple loyalists love the iPhone because it is secure and near impossible to be attacked by a virus or imitated. According to one of my sources "iPhone is the only phone that cannot be attacked by a virus unless it is jail-broken".

4. Performance and Features

iPhone lovers argue that the iPhone performs faster and has better graphic quality than any other phone. One Source argued that]the iPhone 5 runs on dual core but works faster than the S4's Quad core processor;

"I've used both an iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S4, and surprisingly, i would say the iPhone 5 with a dual core processor works faster and better than the S4 with a Quad core processor. It;s about qulaity not quantity" Emeka

Other reasons include,

- Natural likeness for iPhones

- Some folks have never been priviledged to have one so they see it as a big deal

- As substitute for blackberry since bbm now runs on all platforms (Android and iOS)

Last night on Keeping Up With the Kardashians Season 9 Episode 5, the unforgettable, magical moment we've all been waiting for came to fruition at last:

Viewers finally got to see the whole thing go down Sunday, but the joyous event was more bittersweet than we even knew thanks to Scott's mother's health.

At the beginning of the evening, Kim's sisters Kourtney and Khloe are calling all of her friends and family to organize the trip, and Kim's still clueless.

Scott's mom, Bonnie, who's in ICU with some very serious health problems, causes him to fly to New York to be with her like any good son would do.

He made the right call, and is a far better guy than people think based on his reality TV persona. For the rest of the Krew, it's off to the City by the Bay.

Once in San Francisco, the Kardashian family prepares for the big night at their hotel, and heads to AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants,

Several of Kim and Kanye's loved ones are already there. When they get word that Kim Kardashian is en route to the stadium, they head to the dugouts to wait.

As Kim and Kanye pull onto the field, an orchestra starts playing Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful," and roman candles go off all around them.

"I really am in a movie right now," Khloe gushed. "This is so spectacular."

"It's so stunning and breathtaking... it's truly a magical moment."

It's even more magical when Kanye gets down on one knee and asks Kim to marry him, as the words "Pleeease marry meee!" flash across the stadium screen.

She says yes, and everyone runs out on the field to congratulate them.

"I'm, like, shaking," Kim says repeatedly, adding of her diamond ring, "It really is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I just can't believe I'm engaged."

"It is so crazy to me that this is all happening. Kanye really outdid himself."

"It feels like I'm in a dream. It's just the most amazing experience. I am the biggest investigator, so the fact that I didn't see one sign of this happening is the surprise of a lifetime."

'Ye definitely went all in, but what we forget is that while this was happening, Khloe's marriage to Lamar Odom was falling apart, and Scott was losing his mom.

Also, Bruce and Kris Jenner were on the verge of a split as well.

With the exception of Kylie and Kendall Jenner, everyone had their own personal issues going on while they were celebrating Kimye during this tumultuous time.

More than anyone, Scott is coping with the saddest thing ever. An only child, he and his mom were incredibly close. And he has to say goodbye.

A few days after the proposal, Scott joined the rest of the family at Kanye's concert in Las Vegas; Kourtney flies back to N.Y. with him after the show.

A title card notes that Scott Disick's mom died the next day. R.I.P.
