BBM now on Nokia phone (NokiaX)

Nokia and Windows Phone users have been asking for it — and earlier today Nokia and BlackBerry confirmed it: free messaging app BBM is coming to Nokia devices, both the Lumia devices based on Microsoft’s Windows Phone and the new Nokia X handsets built on a forked version of Android announced earlier today. The apps will go live “in the coming months” and no later than this summer, BlackBerry says.
The app will go live first in the Nokia Store. It’s not clear whether it will be extended to other Windows Phone devices although this is the trajectory that other apps have followed.
The move is significant for BlackBerry, as well as Nokia and Microsoft, and comes amidst a wave of attention on messaging apps that are picking up hundreds of millions of users, with one of the biggest of all — WhatsApp — selling to Facebook last week for $19 billion.
What’s interesting is that BlackBerry seems to see the development as a boost for its enterprise business. “BBM continues to grow in popularity as millions of people use our mobile platform for chatting and connecting with friends or colleagues, and we are very excited that we will soon welcome Windows Phone and Nokia X users to the BBM community,” said John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Solutions at BlackBerry.
However, in reality apps like BBM have taken on a life of their own among consumers.
For Nokia and Microsoft, the app gives the companies another key app to continue to fill out its portfolio and prove to existing and potentially new users that devices are just as good and useful as their bigger and more established competitors, namely devices built on Android and Apple’s iPhones — the gold standards for apps and usually the go-to platforms for developers.
And as Stephen Elop pointed out earlier today, Nokia also specifically sees this app as another way to target developing markets, where Nokia has been focusing on winning over new smartphone users with lower-cost devices to counterbalance the fact that many mature markets are well-saturated now with dedicated Android and iPhone users. “We are dedicated to the next billion,” he said today of the strategy, which is being bolstered also by the Nokia X forked Android handsets.
Chat apps like BBM (and WhatsApp) have become important ways for people to stay in touch. The reason for this is because chat apps like BBM are more functional than SMS — allowing for features like having multiple chats, group messaging, voice calls and stickers — and in many countries end up being easier to buy in smaller increments than full voice and texting plans.
For BlackBerry, this is an obvious move to help scale up its BBM business, continuing to provide a platform for communication for both ex-BlackBerry device users who have migrated to other platforms, as well as for new users. There were no updates on the total number of users of BBM today, except to say that “millions of people” are currently using the service.

Ondo Assembly Speaker Dies Of Cancer

  
The Ondo State Government has announced the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adesina Samuel Ajayi, representing  Odigbo Constituency 2.
According to a statement from the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Aderotimi Adelola, the late speaker during his life time was a bridge builder, a man of integrity and a reliable team player who placed the interest of the state above personal consideration.
The untimely death of the Speaker occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, February 25, 2014 during a protracted battle with the Cancer of the Urinary bladder.
The Ondo State Government said that it received the news with rude shock and disbelief and commiserates with the family of the late Speaker, the state legislature as well as the entire people of the state on the irreparable loss.
They prayed that God would grant every one the fortitude to bear the loss.
He was aged 52.

Jonathan Reserves The Right To Suspend Sanusi- Legal Practitioner

The Chairman of National Newspaper Editorial Board, Mr Chris Akiri on Tuesday supported the claim by President Goodluck Jonathan that he reserves the right, constitutionally, to suspend the Governor of the Central Bank.

Mr Kiri, who is also a legal practitioner, is making this claim contrary to the feelings of some members of the House of Representatives.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Mr Kiri insisted that “Some members of the House of Representatives are wrong while the president is right,”  explaining that “a cursory look at the provisions of the CBN Act relating to the appointment or removal of the governor of the Central Bank will show that they are wrong.

“Section 8(1) of that Act, empowers the president to appoint the governor or deputy governors of the bank. When you go to Section 11 (1)(F), it says the president can remove the governor of the Central Bank,” he said.

He also noted that people querying the president’s power to suspend or remove the Central Bank’s governor do so on the basis of Section 11 (1)(C), which says “the Governor of the Central Bank, ceases to be governor, if he has perpetrated certain atrocities that can be categorised under serious misconduct”.

Mr Akiri also called for the prosecution of the suspended Central Bank Governor, Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, saying that since “he is alleged to have committed such atrocity, then he has to be probed and investigations have to be conducted into the allegations”

He said the Federal Government was trying to set up a panel that would investigate the allegations levelled against Mr Sanusi, insisting that to that effect, “they had to suspend him” from office.

“You can sue for wrongful termination of appointment, you can sue for wrongful dismissal” but warned that “you cannot sue for wrongful suspension,” he added.

With less than four months to the expiration of Sanusi’s tenure as governor, the legal practitioner hailed the nomination of Sanusi’s successor by the presidency. He described it as timely, adding that the nominee can go through the screening process before the time finally arrives for him to resume office.

He also said that the suspended governor was guilty of violating the provision of Section 50(3)(D) of the CBN Act as stipulated by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria. According to Mr Akiri, the Act mandates the CBN Governor to “on a monthly basis, render an account of the returns of the bank”.

He goes further to quote Section 50(5), which mandates the CBN Governor to “send such returns to the president on a monthly basis” reiterating the allegations of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria that “he has never done that since he assumed office in 2009”.

Mr Akiri also noted the illegal donations of money and colossal investments in an Islamic Bank in Malaysia as some of the financial recklessness the Federal Government hinged its decision to suspend Mr Sanusi.

Boko Haram: Nigeria Closes Border With Cameroon

The Federal Government of Nigeria has sealed its northern border with Cameroon in an effort to shut out terrorists using its neighbour as a launchpad for attacks.

The closure extends from Borno State, by Lake Chad, to the southern end of Adamawa State, around halfway along Nigeria’s 1,500-mile border with Cameroon.

A statement issued by the Commandant 23 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier-General Rogers Ibe Nicholas said that the closure is meant to effectively curtail the activities of the insurgents.

Borno and Adamawa states are covered by a State of Emergency that President Goodluck Jonathan declared last May as part of an offensive meant to crush the Boko Haram sect.

“To effectively curtail the activities of the insurgents, the Cameroon border in the northeast has been closed indefinitely,” Brigadier-General Rogers Ibe Nicholas said in a statement.

The Islamists, whose struggle for an Islamic state in northern Nigeria has killed thousands and made them the biggest threat to security in Africa’s top oil producer, are currently based in the hilly Gwoza area next to Cameroon.

Nigerian security officials say they often launch deadly attacks then flee over the border to avoid being pursued.

They killed more than 200 people in two attacks last week on villages, prompting renewed criticisms that military action has failed to neutralize them.

Do You Know You Can Die From Drinking Too Much Water?

In January 2007, hours after competing in a radio
station contest to win a Nintendo Wii, 28-year-old
Jennifer Strange was found dead in her California
home. The station's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii"
challenge awarded the game system to the
contestant who could drink the most water without
having to take a trip to the bathroom. According to
preliminary autopsy reports, Ms. Strange apparently
died from drinking too much water too quickly,
resulting in a condition called water intoxication.
At its most basic, water intoxication occurs when a
person drinks so much water that the other nutrients
in the body become diluted to the point that they can
no longer do their jobs. You've probably heard the
term electrolyte before, whether in reference to
sports drinks (which provide electrolytes in addition
to fluids) or to certain conditions, such as bulimia or
diarrhea, that cause dangerous "electrolyte
imbalances" in the body. Electrolytes are simply salt
ions ( atoms with an overall positive or negative
charge) that cells use to move fluids and nerve
messages into and out of cells and throughout the
body. Without electrolytes, the body can't function
(see What are electrolytes? for a more detailed
description). Water intoxication causes an electrolyte
imbalance that affects concentrations of the ion
sodium, and it leads to a condition called
hyponatremia.
In cases of water intoxication, it is extreme
hyponatremia that can ultimately cause coma and
death. If it's caught early, treatment with IV fluids
containing electrolytes can lead to a complete
recovery; but untreated, hyponatremia is fatal. Water
intoxication is basically one form of hyponatremia --
the condition can also be caused by excessive
sweating, severe burns, prolonged dehydration and
certain liver and kidney problems, among other
diseases and conditions.
When a person dies from hyponatremia as a result of
water intoxication, the initiating factor is a severe
sodium imbalance that causes massive cell
damage. Sodium is a positively charged ion, and its
role in the body is to circulate the fluids outside of
cells. As a result, sodium helps regulate blood
pressure and maintain the signals that let muscles
operate properly, among other things. Cells actively
maintain a precise sodium concentration in the body.
Inside the cell, there are more electrolytes; outside
the cell, there is more water. Cells keep sodium
levels healthy by moving water and electrolytes into
and out of the cell to either dilute or increase sodium
levels in body fluids. But when someone drinks a
tremendous amount of water in a short period of
time, and the water does not contain any added
electrolytes, the cellular maintenance system can't
handle the level of sodium dilution that occurs.
The result is that cells desperately try to increase the
sodium concentration in body fluids by taking in
tremendous amounts of water. Some cells can swell a
great deal; others cannot. Brain cells are constrained
by the skull and can end up bursting with the
pressure of the water they are taking in.
The exact amount of water intake that can lead to
water intoxication is unknown and varies with each
individual. Symptoms of water intoxication actually
look a lot like the symptoms of alcohol intoxication,
including nausea, altered mental state, and vomiting.
Other symptoms include headaches, muscle
weakness and convulsions. In severe cases of water
intoxication, coma and death come fairly quickly as a
result of brain swelling. The condition is quite rare
in the general population, but in distance athletics,
it's a known risk and is often avoided by drinking
sports drinks instead of water during training and
events.

Report Predicts Naira Devaluation On Sanusi’s Suspension

The naira is at risk of being devalued after President
Goodluck Jonathan suspended the Central Bank
Governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, last week, eroding
confidence in monetary policy and sending the naira to
a record low.
Bloomberg reported that the naira, which rose for the
first time in six days on Monday, posted its biggest five-
day drop in eight months last week.
The yield on Nigeria’s July 2023 dollar bond had its
steepest one-day jump on record after Sanusi’s removal
on February 20. The security has lost 2.3 per cent this
year, compared with a 0.6 per cent drop in the
JPMorgan Chase & Co. index of African sovereign debt.
While the acting governor pledged continuity in policy
on February 21, saying there were no plans to devalue
the currency, the central bank will have to fight to keep
the naira within its targeted range of three per cent
above or below 155 at twice-weekly foreign-exchange
auctions.
The peg may be shifted to 170 per dollar, boosting
inflationary pressures, according to Yvonne Mhango at
Renaissance Capital.
“The market seems to be anticipating a devaluation,”
Mhango, a sub-Saharan Africa economist at RenCap,
said in a February 21 phone interview from
Johannesburg. “Given the loss of confidence and
sentiment turning against Nigeria, I think they’re going
to struggle to keep the naira at present levels.”
The suspension of Sanusi, 52, followed the governor’s
calls for an investigation in December into billions of
dollars in missing oil revenue.
Sanusi, who was due to leave office at the end of his
term in June, oversaw a drive for stability in Africa’s
second-biggest economy. Sarah Alade, his deputy, was
named acting governor.
Nigeria’s “economic fundamentals cannot be predicated
on a single human being,” a central bank spokesman
Ugochukwu Okoroafor said on the phone from Abuja
on Monday.
“The person coming to succeed Sanusi is a strong player
in the industry and knows what to do on monetary
policy. There is no basis nursing fears of a devaluation.”
Alade has given assurances that monetary policy won’t
change, Doyin Okupe, a spokesman for Jonathan, said in
a mobile-phone text message.
“The initial fluctuations following the suspension have
stabilised,” he said.
There’s “no indication whatsoever that a devaluation of
the naira will occur,” Okupe said.
Sanusi could return if cleared of allegations, Jonathan
said on state-owned NTA television on Monday, adding
it was within his powers to remove the central bank
chief.
The currency gained 0.1 per cent to N164.35 per dollar
by 10:34am in Lagos, strengthening for a second day
after the CBN auctioned $399.7m to lenders. It also sold
dollars directly to banks, Kunle Ezun, an analyst at
Ecobank Transnational Inc. in Lagos, said on the phone
on Monday.
The bank’s Monetary Policy Committee has kept the
benchmark interest rate at a record high of 12 per cent
for more than two years, pushing inflation below 10 per
cent. Consumer-price growth climbed above 15 per cent
in the first half of 2010.
If the currency is devalued in July at the first MPC
meeting under Godwin Emefiele, Jonathan’s nominee to
replace Sanusi, consumer-price growth may climb to as
high as 12 per cent by year-end, Mhango said in a
February 21 note.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo sat top of the goalscoring charts following the group stage with nine strikes, but last week Zlatan Ibrahimovic leapfrogged him with a double in Paris Saint-Germain's 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Ronaldo and Madrid are yet to play the first leg of the last 16, though, so the Portuguese has the chance to add to his tally in Wednesday's away game against Schalke.

Elsewhere, Lionel Messi has not given up on the Champions League Golden Boot. The Argentine currently sits on seven goals, with Barcelona all but through to the quarter-finals at the expense of Manchester City.

The Premier League giants have two candidates for the top scorer title in the form of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, but both will have to be at their best in the second leg at Barca if they are to overturn a 2-0 deficit and threaten Ibrahimovic.

Another striker who will still be dreaming of challenging for top spot is Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, who has now netted five times following his winner against AC Milan last week.

Additionally, outsiders such as Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund), Edinson Cavani (PSG) and Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) are all still in contention, but will have to find their scoring touch in the next few games if they are to have a realistic shot at the Champions League Golden Boot.
