At least 45 die in roof collapse at Latvian supermarket
The death toll from the collapse of a roof at a supermarket in Latvia's capital has climbed to 45, making it the Baltic state's deadliest accident since it won independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, local media reported.
Latvia's State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the revised toll,Latvia's national news agency LETA said.
Latvia's previous most deadly accident was a nursing home fire that killed 26 people in 2007.
Rescue Service spokeswoman Viktorija Sembele earlier said 35 people had also been injured in Thursday's collapse at the Maxima supermarket, in western Riga.
Three firefighters were among the dead, and a toddler was among those injured.
Search teams continue to comb the rubble for more bodies, with the number of dead expected to rise, Sembele said.
"The firefighters are still working to find people, they are putting away the constructions and still approximately 600 square meters of this collapsed area should be searched through," she said.
Sembele declined to speculate on the cause of the collapse.
"There are a lot of versions, a lot of stories. The real cause of this tragic accident will be investigated by state police and other authorities once the rescue is finished."
Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs told CNN that authorities think building materials stored on the roof caused it to collapse.
Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said some of the victims of the collapse had not yet been identified.
"Police (are) currently working at the scene to identify the dead; for victim identification, police officers are also cooperating with relatives who gather on the site," it said in a statement. It asked relatives of anyone missing to call emergency services.
It said a condolence book has been opened in its embassy in Russia, which has received flowers and messages of sympathy.
European Commission President Jose Barroso issued a message of condolence after the collapse.
"I am deeply saddened by the terrible tragedy," he said.
"Please convey my expression of deepest sympathy and solidarity to the families of the victims and those who lost their lives in rescuing people as well as to all those affected by this tragic accident."
What Can I Do To Reduce The Sugar Content In My Blood? - Health
when
it comes to diabetes management, blood sugar control is often the
central theme. After all, keeping your blood sugar level within your
target range can help you live a long and healthy life. But do you know
what makes your blood sugar level rise and fall? The list is sometimes
surprising.
Food
Healthy eating is a cornerstone of any diabetes management plan. But it's not just what you eat that affects your bloodsugar level. How much you eat and when you eat matters, too.
What to do:
Keep to a schedule. Your blood sugar level is highest an hour or two after you eat, and then begins to fall. But this predictable pattern can work to your advantage. You can help lessen the amount of change in your blood sugar levels if you eat at the same time every day, eat several small meals a day or eat healthy snacks at regular times between meals.
Make every meal well-balanced. As much as possible, plan for every meal to have the right mix of starches, fruits and vegetables, proteins, and fats. It's especially important to eat about the same amount of carbohydrates at each meal and snack because they have a big effect on blood sugar levels. Talk to your doctor, nurse or dietitian about the best food choices and appropriate balance.
Eat the right amount of foods. Learn what portion size is appropriate for each type of food. Simplify your meal planning by writing down portions for the foods you eat often. Use measuring cups or a scale to ensure proper portion size.

Eat the right amount of foods. Learn what portion size is appropriate for each type of food. Simplify your meal planning by writing down portions for the foods you eat often. Use measuring cups or a scale to ensure proper portion size.
Coordinate your meals and medication. Too little food in comparison to your diabetes medications — especially insulin — may result in dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Too much food may cause your blood sugar level to climb too high (hyperglycemia). Talk to your diabetes health care team about how to best coordinate meal and medication schedules.
Exercise
Physical activity is another important part of your diabetes management plan. When you exercise, your muscles use sugar (glucose) for energy. Regular physical activity also improves your body's response to insulin. These factors work together to lower your blood sugar level. The more strenuous your workout, the longer the effect lasts. But even light activities — such as housework, gardening or being on your feet for extended periods — can lower your blood sugar level.
What to do:
Talk to your doctor about an exercise plan. Ask your doctor about what type of exercise is appropriate for you. If you've been inactive for a long time, your doctor may want to check the condition of your heart and feet before advising you. He or she can recommend the right balance of aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise.
Keep an exercise schedule. Talk to your doctor about the best time of day for you to exercise so that your workout routine is coordinated with your meal and medication schedules.
Know your numbers. Talk to your doctor about what blood sugar levels are appropriate for you before you begin exercise.
Check your blood sugar level. Check your blood sugar level before, during and after exercise, especially if you take insulin or medications that lower blood sugar. Be aware of warning signs of low blood sugar, such as feeling shaky, weak, confused, lightheaded, irritable, anxious, tired or hungry.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water while exercising because dehydration can affect blood sugar levels.
Be prepared. Always have a small snack or glucose pill with you during exercise in case your blood sugar drops too low. Wear a medical identification bracelet when you're exercising.
Adjust your diabetes treatment plan as needed. If you take insulin, you may need to adjust your insulin dose before exercising or wait a few hours to exercise after injecting insulin. Your doctor can advise you on appropriate changes in your medication. You may need to adjust treatment if you've increased your exercise routine.
Medication
Insulin and other diabetes medications are designed to lower your blood sugar level when diet and exercise alone aren't sufficient for managing diabetes. But the effectiveness of these medications depends on the timing and size of the dose. And any medications you take for conditions other than diabetes can affect your blood sugar level, too.
SARKODIE!
Name: Michael Kwesi Owusu Addo
Date of Birth: 10th July 1988
Label: Duncwills Entertainment/Konvict Africa
Honors: 2010/2012 Overall Best Artiste, Best Rapper, BET Best International Artiste Africa
among others.
As a trend setting and inventive rapper, Sarkodie began his instrumental career as an underdog rapper‐ who through years of maturity has earned a novelty in the rap game in Ghana and beyond. Born as Michael Kwesi Owusu Addo and raised in the infamous Tema neighborhood, Sarkodie is a Ghanaian top notch and award‐winning rapper with just two (2) albums to his credit, yet has entrenched his impervious personality in the annals of the music industry as the most sought after. Sarkodie started rap at the age of 4 with a profound dream of changing the music game and making his presence felt worldwide in the coming years. He finally rose to mainstream fame in 2008 after turning down a job offer from an advertising company to fully take up music as a professional career. In 2010, he had several collaborations and earned numerous accolades and nominations including 5 major awards at the 2010 Ghana Music Awards with his debut album, Makye and other epochal international awards. He was also part of the historic Ghana cypher that appeared on the international airing of the 2010 BET Hip‐Hop Awards. Breaking the jinx, Sarkodie's latest, hot‐selling Rapperholic album bagged 12 glorious nominations in the 2012 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. On April 14, 2012 Sarkodie made history when he was crowned the Artist of the Year for the second time, as well as winning the award for Most Popular Song of the Year for his hit song You Go Kill Me and the Best Rapper of the Year for another second time.
Sarkodie, was also nominated for the 2010 MTV Africa Awards, MAMAS. Sarkodie was nominated in the best Anglophone category alongside Wande Coal of Nigeria, Daddy Owen of Kenya and Big Nuz of South Africa. The nominees for the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards in partnership with Zain were shortlisted by MAMA Academy, made up of a group of music industry experts and taste makers from across the African continent.Sarkodie also won "Best Collaboration of The Year" award with the video of his song "Lay Away" which features Sway from UK at the SOUND CITY MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS 2010 in Nigeria.
Managed by Duncwills Entertainment with backing from Konvict Africa, Sarkodie has a soft spot and immense passion for orphans and has made several donations through musical performances intended to raise funds for needy children and other community projects as a whole.
Sarkodie's iconic and breath‐taking stage presence has enabled him to perform on platforms with notable international acts including Chipmunk, T‐Pain, Trey Songz, Mavado amongst others. Having toured the U.S.A and U.K, Sarkodie's hallmark is performance satisfaction and a perfect delivery of thought‐provoking lyrics in his kind of music. As he gradually develops into a million‐selling rapper with a distinctive musical signature, his famous claim of being the "fastest rapper" is certainly worth considering. Sarkodie winning the 2012 BET Best International Act: Africa further solidifies him as one of the best rappers in Africa to ever come out of Ghana.

Users Of Tinted Glass Risk N50,000 Fine, 6-Month Jail Term —Senate
Anyone driving tinted glass vehicles without permit now risk a fine of N50,000 or a six-month jail term or both.
This was as a result of the final passage by the Senate, on Thursday, the Bill for an Act to amend the Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act aimed at checking indiscriminate use of tinted glass vehicles without approval.
The options of fine, jail term or both were contained in the bill, first read on the floor on April 18, 2013 and sponsored by Senator Ita Enang.
The decision of the Senate followed the adoption and approval of the report of its joint committee on Police Affairs and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on the bill.
The chairman of the joint committee, Senator Paulinus Nwagwu, said the bill “seeks essentially, to amend the extant law in order to check indiscriminate use of tinted glass vehicles which beat security checks and carry out nefarious activities.”
Nwagwu said the need for the bill arose, following the reactions of Nigerians to the recent announcement by the Nigeria Police of its intention to arrest and prosecute Nigerians driving cars with tinted glass.
He said it was, therefore, necessary to let Nigerians know that the police was not trying to introduce a new law but was merely trying to enforce an already existing Regulations 66 (2) of the National Traffic Regulations of 1997 and the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act.
Nwagwu said the Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Tinted Glass ) Act Amendment Bill 2013 was thus sponsored to, among others, amend the enabling act with a view to streamlining it with the present realities.
“The bill also seeks to address the persisting injustice meted out to Nigerians through embarrassment and harassment, which constitutes a serious affront to the fundamental rights of Nigerians against discrimination as enshrined under Section 42 of the Constitution,” he added.
He said various stakeholders, during the public hearing on the bill, had emphasised the need to address current upsurge in terrorism and other crimes like kidnapping, child trafficking.
The bill, among other provisions, requested buyers of imported vehicles with tinted, shaded, coloured, darkened or treated glass to change it to transparent ones within 14 days from the date of arrival in Nigeria or date of purchase.
In the alternative, it stipulated that buyers of such vehicles should request for a permit for the use of such tinted glass vehicles from the Office of the Inspector General of Police, anywhere in the country, within 90 days of importing the vehicle.

Scolari is right - Why Brazil should expect to win the World Cup
The veteran coach has every reason to be confident
after Robinho inspired the 2014 tournament hosts to a sixth straight win
in warm-up matches
COMMENTBy Rupert Fryer in Toronto
As his colleagues jogged back into position for the restart, Robinho looked to the heavens and pumped his fists. Thrice. Smiling from ear to ear.
His is a particularly infectious smile. And one that has been seen all week, whether it be teasing Bernard after the little man was nutmegged by David Luiz in training, strolling through the hotel lobby or after backheeling a pass for Hulk to wrap up the 5-0 victory over Honduras.
It was as wide as ever on Tuesday night in Toronto when his goal earned Brazil their sixth straight win - their 13th in 19 games since Luiz Felipe Scolari was once again brought in for a rescue job. He did it in 2002. And right now all signs point to him doing it again.
Almost a year on from his appointment, Brazil look like world beaters. They believe. So does Scolari. "Brazil will be world champions," he said on Saturday as the momentum they built up during a stunning Confederations Cup-winning campaign shows no signs of slowing down.
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The coach known as "the professor" revealed this week he is already certain of as many as 20 of the names that will appear in his 23-man World Cup squad. The group is settled. Their bond appears unbreakable. For all the typical talk of Felipao establishing another "Scolari family", it appears that's exactly what he's done. Defender Maxwell stated "never before have I been part of a squad that enjoy being together so much" - and he's not the only one to do so.
In 12 months, Scolari appears to have solved all the problems suffered by his predecessor, Mano Menezes.
Luiz Gustavo has stepped out of the international wilderness to become a fixture in the holding midfield role. Julio Cesar, despite almost zero playing time for his club, has rediscovered his form to establish himself as No.1. Fred may not be the most glamorous centre forward to have donned the No.9 jersey for the Selecao, but few would bet against him continuing to find the net.
Even in his absence, and with Diego Costa having snubbed Brazil to instead play for Spain, former Manchester City and Everton striker Jo has stepped up to a level few thought he would reach following his Premier League disappointment – prior to the Honduras game, he had averaged a goal every 72 minutes for Scolari.
On Tuesday night at Toronto's Rogers Centre, Brazil faced their biggest test since defeating Spain in June. Chile rode into Canada on the back of a 2-0 victory over England and unbeaten in 10 games under Jorge Sampaoli.
Most importantly, la Roja presented a different sort of threat than many of Brazil's recent opponents. While the likes of Honduras and Zambia have sat back, conceded possession and looked only to stifle Brazil's increasingly prolific attack, Chile took the game to them.
"We won't change our style," said Sampaoli when I asked him before the game whether they would be more cautious after seeing Brazil breeze through Spain's high press in the Confederations Cup final.
After an opening 20 minutes in which Brazil dominated, Sampaoli made an early and shrewd substitution, withdrawing Jose Pedro Fuenzalida, a passenger in midfield, for playmaker Jorge Valdivia. From then on Chile regained control of possession and Brazil had to adapt. But adapt they did, ceding possession to play on the counter-attack.
And they were devastating. "We could have won by more," said Scolari. Had Willian chosen a better pass when they were through three-on-two, had Robinho taken his chance when one-on-one with Bravo, had Neymar not strayed in from an offside position to backheel home from close range, then they would have done.
Perhaps most importantly was the tactical flexibility Brazil displayed on Tuesday. Ramires' reintroduction has seen them switch between a 4-2-3-1 and a flat 4-3-3 in recent matches and, though some criticise some of the weaker opposition they have faced, they have provided excellent preparation for a World Cup in which many will seek to simply to stop the hosts from playing.
This result, coupled with the victory over Spain, shows that Scolari's Brazil can mix it up.
"I think we will win the World Cup," said one prominent Brazilian journalist as he waited for Big Phil's press conference on Tuesday. He's not the only one.
STARS WHO MISSED OUT ON WORLD CUP
Every footballer in the world wants to be playing in Brazil next summer
when the World Cup returns to South America. But only a handful will be
there - all aiming to reach the final at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro
on 13 July. With many stars not taking part, BBC Sport looks at the
biggest names forced to watch from afar [1 of 12]
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Volleys, audacious flicks and towering headers are the norm for the Paris St-Germain crowd-pleaser. But six assists and eight goals in qualifying, including a brace against play-off opponents Portugal, was not enough for Sweden. "A World Cup without me is something I won't be following," he says [2 of 12]
Robert Lewandowski: International defenders across the globe - and particularly those based in the German top-flight - will be thankful the Borussia Dortmund striker will not be in Brazil. The Poland frontman, currently the Bundesliga's leading scorer with nine goals, could only help his nation finish fourth in England's Group H [3 of 12]
Gareth Bale: Will the world's most expensive player ever play for Wales in a major tournament? Ryan Giggs, Mark Hughes and Ian Rush never managed it. The £85m Real Madrid midfielder saw his side finish seven points shy of a play-off spot in Group A [4 of 12]
Christian Eriksen: In 2012-13, his final season at Ajax, the Tottenham midfielder created more goalscoring chances than any other player across Europe's top leagues. That includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But he will not be unlocking any defences in Brazil after Denmark failed to progress from Group B [5 of 12]
David Alaba: Austria have not reached the World Cup finals since 1998 - but one man who might, one day, help end the barren run is Bayern Munich's brilliant full-back/midfielder. Not this time though. Despite Alaba scoring five of their last 11 goals, Austria missed out on a Group C play-off place by three points [6 of 12]
Branislav Ivanovic: Wholehearted at the back and useful in attack, but Chelsea's multi-tasking Serbia defender will have to watch next year's tournament from home. Although he has helped his national team concede just six goals in eight games, they were pipped to the Group A play-off place by local rivals Croatia [7 of 12]
Stevan Jovetic: The emergence of Montenegro since they gained independence in 2008 has been rapid. They finished third behind England and Ukraine in Group H, with Manchester City's forward giving the English defence a torrid time along the way [8 of 12]
Arda Turan: Remember Turkey at the 2002 World Cup? That epic journey to the semi-finals seems a long time ago now. They have not qualified since and that means Atletico Madrid's flying winger Arda, who created 26 chances during qualifying, has been denied a chance to shine on the greatest stage [9 of 12]
Petr Cech: Chelsea's giant Czech has only played at one World Cup so far - 2006 - and at the age of 31 missing 2014 would probably mean no chance of playing in a future World Cup. But don't bet against the Champions League winner featuring in Russia 2018 [10 of 12]
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Like Borussia Dortmund team-mate Robert Lewandowski, Gabon forward Aubameyang will not be able to reproduce his impressive Bundesliga form at the World Cup. His nation, who played in the London 2012 Olympic Games, failed to make it to the African qualifying play-offs [11 of 12]
Jonathan Pitroipa: Named on the BBC's African Footballer of the Year 2013 shortlist alongside Aubameyang is Burkina Faso star Pitroipa. But the Rennes winger, who starred as the Burkinabe reached the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final, is also missing - they were eliminated by play-off opponents Algeria [12 of 12]
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Volleys, audacious flicks and towering headers are the norm for the Paris St-Germain crowd-pleaser. But six assists and eight goals in qualifying, including a brace against play-off opponents Portugal, was not enough for Sweden. "A World Cup without me is something I won't be following," he says [2 of 12]

WOW! A LEGEND FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI, A LEGEND INDEED
In 1954, Kuti joined the Cool Cats as a singer in that highlife band (highlife being the rage of the Lagos music scene at the time). During this period Kuti developed his own unusual sound which he described as highlife-jazz. In 1968 Kuti announced the arrival of Afro-beat, within the year was promoting his sound all over the USA on a 10-month tour where he became influenced by American jazz. When he returned to his homeland he opened a nightclub, the Shrine, and changed the name of his band to Africa 70 (and later to Egypt 80). His bands traditionally included the typical huge line-up consisting of many singers and dancers, numerous saxophonists, trumpeteers, drummers, percussionists, and of course, many guitarists blending African rhythms and jazz horn lines with politicized song lyrics. His music was intricate, rather than calling it Afro-beat you might more arguably consider it Afro-jazz. Entire recordings often consisted of just a few songs and this propensity for jamming set up a roadblock for Fela to attain commercial acceptance in the United States. He also abhored performing a song after recording it, and this led to audience disinterest in the U.S. where the people wanted their music to be recognizable hits.
Kuti continued his outspoken attacks on the Nigerian government. When the people returned to power in 1979, Kuti began his own political party - MOP (Movement of the People). The military returned to power in 1983 and within the year Kuti was sentenced to five years in prison on a spurious currency smuggling charge. He was released in 1986 after yet another change of government.
Fela Anikulapo Kuti died on Saturday, August 2, 1997, at 4pm (local time) in Lagos, Nigeria. It had been rumoured for some time that Fela had a serious illness he was refusing treatment for, many said he was suffering from prostate cancer. But as it turns out, Fela died from complications due to AIDS. As Fela's brother, Olikoye Ransome Kuti, said at a news conference:
"The immediate cause of death of Fela was heart failure, but there were many complications arising from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome".Fela was a man with great influence in the African music world, he is irreplaceable and his presence will be sorely misssed.
