Muslim Groups Condemn Conversion Of Abducted Girls To Islam

The Muslim Right Concern (MURIC) and Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Council, have condemned the abduction and forceful conversion of kidnapped girls into Islam by the Boko Haram sect, stating that there was no compulsion in making people accept Islam.

Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a statement on Tuesday, described the acts as baseless, urging the Federal Government not to accept releasing arrested terrorists in exchange for the girls as demanded by Shekau.

He said:

We reject the purported conversion of the kidnapped girls. It is cowardly, shameful, ridiculous and preposterous. It is sacrilege. We affirm authoritatively that such conversion does not hold water in Islam because a non-Muslim can only be converted on his or her own free will. We have no iota of doubt that the girls ‘converted’ under duress. Such ‘conversion’ is null and void under the Shari’ah.

The so-called conversion is therefore baseless, unfounded and of no validity whatsoever. It exists only in the hallucinated imageries in Shekau’s demented mind.

We urge the Federal Government to dismiss Shekau’s offer of exchange of Boko Haram prisoners for the kidnapped girls. A man who orders the invasion and kidnap of innocent young girls is honour-blind. Shame on Boko Haram. Shekau has no modicum of integrity left in his anatomy. He has no intention of honouring this deal. He is trying to buy time. He is digging in.

On its part, the MSSN in a statement by its President, Kaamil Kalejaiye, said it could not understand the ascription of killings of innocent people in the name of religious conviction.

Kalejaiye said:

The spate of unjustified killings in our country is getting unbearable and Islam is always at the receiving end. We condemn these killings, abductions and all forms of attack on citizens. We unequivocally condemn its perpetrators. Islam is a religion of peace and does not in any way have a confluence with killing, bombing, kidnapping and forcing people of other faiths into its fold.

It's good to see Muslim groups speaking up against these barbaric acts by Boko Haram. You know it's bad when even al Qaeda condemns the abduction of the girls.

Chibok Girls Forcefully Converted To Islam In New Video

Boko Haram video emerged Monday purportedly showing some of the kidnapped Nigerian girls in headdresses and the terror group's leader declaring they have converted to Islam.

The 27-minute footage shows girls wearing Hijab headdresses and reciting the Quran as they make Islamic declarations of faith.

It was shot in a nondescript area of a bush.

Last month, a convoy of Islamist militants drove into a school in northeastern Nigeria, abducted nearly 300 girls and fled into the night. At least 276 girls remain missing since the terror group seized them on April 14.

World Economic Forum On Africa Attracts $68bn Investments, Says Organiser

The just concluded World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa has attracted over 68 billion dollars (about N12.9 trillion) in investment to the African continent, Dr Philipp Rosler, the Managing Director of the Forum, said. Rosler disclosed this in a closing remarks on Friday in Abuja.

He said the funds were in the form of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) as well as private and public investments across African countries which would continue to yield results in the next years. Rosler said the funds were targeted at investments in beautiful projects that would foster the agriculture sector, improve infrastructure such as roads, railways. hospitals, education, skill development and ICT.

”What this means is that it is not just money, but opportunities for Africa and the reason why we are here is to unlock the opportunities for the improvement in the states of Africa,” he said. He said that the event was one of the best his organisation had hosted in the recent years.

Rosler said that the forum had achieved the missions of his organisation ‘’which is commitment to the growth of the world in three steps”. The steps, according to him, are “to create community of interest, to create community of purpose and lastly to have community of exchange. The WEF(A), Abuja, has been able to achieve these. For instance, in creating the community of interest, the articles about the last three days is more that 48,000 articles which is three times more than the last year.

“Millions of people have now realised that Africa is important in global economy.

“Secondly, we created the community of purpose, we have more than 1000 participants here in the last three days and they were here not withstanding all the reports about security. They were here because of all the discussions and they send their voices of solidarity with the people of Nigeria.

“They come up with a common voice that they will never allow the terrorists and violence dictate our agenda and the peoples agenda for the continent.”

Speaking in same vein, Elzie Kanza, the Director and Head of Africa WEF, said since May 2, there were about 50,000 social media items that mentioned WEF (A), Abuja.

She said the coverage had a total reach of over 2.1 billion, which is about 30 per cent of world population.

On twitter, she said the numbers of followers increase by over 1200 people per day and the digital reach increased to about 4.1 million people.

Kanza said that on facebook, the clips on launch of the “Save-School Initiative” press conference was watched 1200 times.

In terms of practical results, she said that the “Safe School Initiative”, an aftermath of the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, was outstanding.

The ‘Safe School Initiative Fund’ was created by the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, following the abduction and it is to develop and enhanced education in the terrorism-ravaged areas of Nigeria.

The fund had attracted 10 billion dollars each from the initiator and the Federal Government, respectively. Kanza said that the Chinese government had planned to invest 42 billion dollars in Africa, 10 billion dollars in investment financing, 30 billion dollars in extending credit lines and 2 billion dollars into China-Africa investment fund.

In the business sector, she said the Dangote group would be investing about 16 billion dollars in Nigeria over the next four years, adding that it would also create 180,000 jobs.

According Kanza, another company is investing one billion dollars across Africa in the next 10 years while 20,00 jobs will be created created through the Digital Africa initiative. In the power sector, she said that 2 billion dollars from donor agencies had been committed to improve electricity supply across Nigeria.

ON health, Kanza said that the immunisation drive got 700 million dollars through an MoU that was signed.

According to her, in the overall, there is strong commitment between the private and the public sector to collaborate regionally and globally in the fight against terror in Nigeria and the rest of Africa.

Boko Haram, Mindless Bigots -buhari

Former military head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari, has described members of the Boko Haram sect that has carried out several terrorists attacks in the country, as mindless bigots, and not followers of God. Buhari who is also a chief of the All Progressives Congress, made this known in a statement released on Thursday. Buhari who expressed grave concerns over the abduction of schoolgirls of the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

He said, “Over the past few weeks, the abduction of the school girls at Chibok, Borno State has underscored the threat we have been facing as a nation in recent times from the actions of misguided persons masquerading as adherents of Islam.

“That horrific video posted on the Internet is a clear manifestation of the mindlessness of the bigots. It shows them for whom they are, such men cannot threaten nor should they be allowed to violate our sovereignty. It is clear from what they profess that they are not followers of God.

“They do not mean well for our country and her citizens. I am a Muslim, I am versed in the teaching of Christianity and I understand both religions to seek peaceful co-existence of all humanity.”

While condoling with families whose girls were among those abducted, he described the abductors as a group of anarchists. He said, “There is no justification whatsoever for this unrestrained disregard for the sanctity of human life. It has no place in the Holy Quran and neither does it have a place in the Holy Bible.

“Let these people know that the entire civilised world is united against their terrorist act. We are grateful to the world for standing by Nigeria at this trying time. We hope and pray that the young ladies will be reunited with their respective families in the days to come”

He used the medium to call upon the Federal Government and the nation’s Armed Forces to ensure citizens’ safety under the present situation. He said, “We are glad that the Federal Government has accepted international support in the search for the missing girls and for an end to the insurgency in parts of the country.

“I fought for a united Nigeria. In my old age, I want my grandchildren, your grandchildren, our youths and indeed all Nigerians to benefit from a prosperous and united country devoid of sectarian violence whether home grown or imposed on us from outside.

“Now is not the time to play politics. Now is also not the time to trade blames and amplify our ideological differences. The unity of Nigeria is not negotiable and nothing should divide us as a people.”

Shekau Was Almost Killed In 2012

The Nigerian military has touted Shekau's death several times, only to retract its claim after he appeared alive and vibrant in propaganda videos.

They almost got him in September 2012 when they raided his home, where he had snuck in for his six-day-old baby's naming ceremony, according to the International Crisis Group. He managed to get away with a gunshot wound to the leg; his wife and three children were taken by the military.

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/07/world/africa/abubakar-shekau-profile/

With Shekau (whose nom de guerre is Imam Abu Mohammed Abubakar bin Muhammed Shekau) at the helm of its most significant faction (see below), Boko Haram has grown more ruthless, violent and destructive and less open to dialogue. Perhaps most audacious were its suicide bombings in Abuja of the police headquarters and the UN building in June and August 2011.

104
The security forces became more aggressive in turn in September 2012. On 22 September, troops slapped round-the-clock curfews on three cities in the North East, Damaturu, Potiskum and Mubi, killed 36 suspected militants, including a top sect commander and arrested more than 200 in house-to-house raids. Two days later they stormed a Boko Haram enclave in Damaturu, including Shekau’s home. They almost caught him – he had sneaked in the day before for the naming ceremony of his six-day old baby. Fighting was fierce: 35 militants were killed and two soldiers injured. Shekau escaped, with a thigh wound; his wife and three children were taken into military custody. Three SUVs, seven laptops and a large arms cache reportedly were recovered from the house.

105
Shekau was said to have been spirited to Gao, in northern Mali, when it was held by Islamist armed groups.

106
This is one reason Nigerian troops were deployed to Mali in January 2013 to support the French Operation Serval that expelled Ansar Dine and the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) from that country’s northern cities.

107
Shekau now reportedly travels frequently to Niger and Cameroon, facilitated by his Kanuri ethnicity and the long, porous borders. He re-
surfaced in 2013, however, in internet videos demanding the release of detained Boko Haram women and children (presumably including his own family).

108
A top commander, Abubakar Yola, alias Abu Jihad, was killed in a shoot-out with troops in Mubi, where 156 suspected members were rounded up. Other factions were neutralised following the capture or killing of their leaders.

109
On 17 September 2012, soldiers shot dead a sect spokesman, alias Abul Qaqa, outside Kano, along with the sect commander in charge of central Kogi and Kaduna states and Abuja.

110
This was a significant blow, a source close to the sect said, because the two were considered its “think-tank”.

Apple Buys Beats Audio For $3.2 Billion

Apple officially has purchased audio equipment and service company Beats for $3.2 billion. As part of the deal, streaming service Beats Music would also join the company's iTunes division. Both services were competitors until now, but it would be interesting to see if Apple is going to merge them together.
The piece of news comes hours after initial reports surfaced that the deal would happen in the coming days.

The deal is confirmed by one of the founders of the company Dr. Dre and actor Tyrese Gibson, who announced the news on actor's Instagram page. By far, this is Apple's largest acquisition recently and the company is hoping it will help its iTunes service regain ground.
According to a report by Nielsen SoundScan album and individual track sales were down 13% and 11%, respectively, so there's certainly room for improvement.

Everton Vs Manchester City Today At 5:30pm - European Soccer

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has still not given up hope of sneaking into the Champions League as his side enter the last-chance saloon.

While a point at home to title-chasing Manchester City will guarantee a return to European football next season it would almost certainly end their already-slim top-four challenge.

Arsenal, who play Sunday, are four points ahead with a superior but not insurmountable goal difference advantage but Arsene Wenger's side need to drop four points in their last two matches for Everton to stand a chance of catching them.

The Toffees look like being the unlucky losers as their points tally of 69 would have qualified them for the Champions League in seven of the last 11 seasons.

But that does not mean Martinez is conceding defeat or happy to settle for a point which will secure a Europa League spot.

"We don't look at it that way. We have 69 points and we want to beat that. We don't take it lightly," he said.

"We need six points because I still think 75 points will be very much an exceptional figure, wherever it takes you.

"The only thing you can control in football is what you can do.

"Seventy-five points in the last three seasons would have got you in the top three.

"We are not a team who are happy just to do enough, that is not in our nature."

City will arrive knowing they almost certainly need all three points to retain their narrow edge over Liverpool in the title race.

But Everton have won their last four matches at home to City and have lost only twice in the league at Goodison Park since December 30 2012.

Martinez takes great confidence from that and wants his side to give the fans a good send off in the final home game of what has been a successful season of transition after the departure of David Moyes last summer.

"This is one of those glamorous games you keep in your memory forever," he added.

"We have been outstanding in the last few fixtures at home and you look at (wins against) similar teams like Arsenal and Manchester United and we need to carry on at the same level.

"It is important we give our fans a proper send off and make it a performance to remember.

"It is a very easy game to approach from our point of view.

"The last home fixture is always a special fixture so in that respect it is very easy - we are fully focused on hosting a really important game."

Playmaker David Silva could return for title favourites Manchester City.

The Spaniard missed last weekend's win at Crystal Palace after being carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury in the previous game against West Brom.

The 28-year-old has now recovered and his availability gives City a lift ahead of the final week of the season.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini said: "David is a very important player for us. He will be in the squad list.

"The only player we have injured is Jesus Navas. All the rest of the squad are fit."

Winger Navas has missed the last three games with an ankle injury.

City, in third, trail leaders Liverpool by three points but still have three games to play as opposed to their rivals' two - and have a superior goal difference.

They play the first of them at Goodison Park this weekend before concluding their campaign with home matches against Aston Villa and West Ham.

Pellegrini expects Everton, who still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League, to provide tough opposition.

City also have a poor record against the Toffees, having won just five of the last 19 meetings between the sides and lost on their last four trips to Goodison.

Pellegrini said: "I think Everton at any stage of the season will always be a difficult team. They play very well, Roberto (Martinez) is doing a very good job there, the same way he did before at Wigan.

"He is playing for Champions League, Europa League.

"We don't expect anything at Everton. We're sure we are going to have a very tough game there."

Victory for Everton could hand the title initiative to their fiercest rivals Liverpool - something their fans may not relish - but Pellegrini does not think that will affect the players' mentality.

He said: "The feeling outside will not decide the match. I think the Everton players will try to win the game."

Pellegrini added that defender Matija Nastasic is back in full training after three months out with a knee injury but is not match-fit.

He said: "Nastasic is working with the squad but he is not able to play in this moment. He's not injured any more."
