Jonathan Cancels FEC To Mourn VP Sambo’s Brother

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed that the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, scheduled for Wednesday be shelved to enable Council members attend the three-day prayer for the late pilot, Yusuf Sabo Sambo, the younger brother of the Vice President, Namadi Sambo.

Sam Nwaobasi, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced the suspension of the meeting.
Sabo sambo died on April 27, in an accident on the Bill Clinton Drive, Airport road, Abuja.
He was born in 1956 and is survived by his wife, three daughters, and 10 brothers and sisters.
He had since been buried at the Apo cemetery, Abuja, according to Islamic rites.
As a pilot, he worked for Nigeria Airways and the Presidential fleet before retiring to start a private business.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL: 2ND LEG

Chelsea Fc Vs Atletico Madrid

Match preview

The elite defenses of Atletico Madrid and Chelsea canceled each other out as their semifinal first leg ended in a scoreless stalemate.

But with injuries and suspensions hitting the blue shirts at the worst time, the advantage will definitely be with Atletico heading to the second leg in London.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho went with his tried-and-tested defensive gameplan in his team’s road leg, but he may need a rethink their tactics for the second leg at home after his defense and midfield was ravaged by injury and suspension.

The Blues will surely be without first-choice goalie Petr Cech (dislocated shoulder) and John Terry (foot), who were both injured in the first leg, as well as key midfielders Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel (both suspended) for the return leg.

Due to all of those missing players, Mourinho will have a threadbare squad to work with. He’ll need to shuffle the deck in midfield and defense, but leading scorers Eden Hazard (18 goals) and Samuel Eto’o (12 goals), who both missed the first leg due to injuries, should return to bolster their attack.

Since suffering defeat to Basel in the very first game of the group stage, Chelsea has gone a perfect 4-0-0 at home in the Champions League and kept a clean sheet in all four wins.

However, Chelsea recently lost at Stamford Bridge to bottom club Sunderland in the league, snapping Mourinho’s 77-game home unbeaten run as Chelsea boss.

It’s a busy week for Chelsea. The team is set to play a critical fixture against Liverpool on Sunday that will go a long way in determining the final standings of the Premiership.

Atletico Madrid were the aggressors for much of their 0-0 first leg draw at their home ground. Atleti fired 25 shots on Chelsea’s goal and enjoyed 69% possession.

However, only four of those 25 shots hit the target as the Spaniards failed to capitalize on their possession advantage with goals.

Atletico is much more adept at counterattacking than breaking down the opposition with loads of possession, but with Chelsea missing key personnel in the second leg, the onus will be on manager Diego Simeone to take advantage by making more attacking moves.

At the back, Atletico remains incredibly solid.

The first leg draw was their fifth straight game without conceding a goal in all competitions; they’ve allowed just five in the Champions League.

The Spaniards are also the only team in the competition yet to experience defeat (eight wins and three draws in 11 games).

Tito Vilanova has died at age 45

Tito Vilanova has died at age 45

The ex-Barcelona coach was hospitalised following a drastic downturn in his health which required emergency surgery, but was tragically unable to survive his battle with cancer
Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has died at the age of 45, the club have confirmed, after unsuccessful emergency surgery.

The ex-central midfielder was admitted to hospital following a downturn in his health which required an operation on his stomach on Thursday, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirming the trainer was "fighting" for his life.

However, Vilanova, whose post-playing career has been tragically plagued by cancer, was unable to battle any longer and passed away on Friday afternoon.

Vilanova's public health problems began after he suffered a relapse of parotid gland cancer in 2012 - a year after his original diagnosis - just six months into his tenure as head coach at Camp Nou as Pep Guardiola's successor.

He underwent surgery in December 2012, with Jordi Roura taking his place on the bench while he recovered in New York, before returning in March 2013 to see out the rest of the reason and guide Barca to La Liga victory.

However, his continued health woes saw his unexpectedly step down as coach of the Catalans last summer, with Gerardo Martino taking the reins in his place.

Vilanova has largely - and understandably - been out of the spotlight since he left his position at Camp Nou but rumours of his ill health have sadly been revealed to be true. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Following confirmation of his death, Barcelona president Bartomeu said in a statement: "Tito will be reference as a man and in terms of football for Barcelona forever. We thank him for everything he taught us. Rest in peace."

The Catalans, whom he worked under for years before being promoted from within to head coach in 2012, also sent their condolences to the family of Vilanova.

"The club wishes to express its most heartfelt sympathy to his family, who are being joined in these moments of mourning by Barcelona members and fans all around the world, as well as the rest of the footballing and sporting world.

"The Vilanova family has asked for respect for their desire for the strictest intimacy in the moments after his death."

Today,April 25,2014 Is World Malaria Day

What is Malaria?
Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It was once thought that the disease came from fetid marshes, hence the name mal aria (bad air). In 1880, scientists discovered the real cause of malaria: a one-cell parasite called plasmodium. Later they discovered that the parasite is transmitted from person to person through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito, which requires blood to nurture her eggs.

Malaria Worldwide
3.3 billion people - half the world's population - are at risk of malaria
One million people die each year from malaria
Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria
Malaria in Africa

90% of all malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa
1 in 5 childhood deaths are caused by malaria
Malaria is responsible for a 1.3% growth penalty per year in some African countries
10,000 pregnant women and 200,000 infants die from malaria in Africa
Malaria costs Africa more than $12 billion in lost GDP every year

Pele: Zidane was better than Messi

Pele: Zidane was better than Messi
Pele says Zinedine Zidane was a better player than Lionel Messi when he was at his peak but revealed he would vote for the Barcelona star ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or.

Zidane lifted the World Cup and European Championship with France during his playing days as well as the Champions League and then the Ballon d'Or with Real Madrid.

Messi has been widely-heralded as arguably the greatest player of all-time having won the Ballon d'Or a record four times, but Brazil legend Pele does not share that same point of view.

He told reporters: "Individually, I think Zidane was better than Messi. Zidane was amazing and the team-mates he played with were not the same standard as Messi’s; he plays with Xavi and Iniesta at Barcelona."

The Argentina international is again expected to be among the frontrunners to lift the game's most prestigious individual prize, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery his closest rivals for the crown.

And Pele admitted he would vote for Messi ahead of the aforementioned duo, while fellow Selecao legend Rivelino rubbished comparisons between the forward and Albiceleste great Diego Maradona.

"I would vote for Messi because of his technique," Pele added.

Rivelino stated: "In my opinion, Neymar is technically better than Messi. There’s no way you can compare Messi to Maradona. He fitted perfectly into a team where everything worked. This year another player will win."

2015: PDP Govs’ Push For Jonathan

Awaits President’s declaration next month
BY CLIFFORD NDUJIHE
BARRING unforeseen events, President Goodluck Jonathan will tell Nigerians whether or not he will seek re-election next month, exactly nine months to the February 14, 2015 presidential polls, Vanguard has gathered. He would have broken the ice this month but has to tarry awhile, according to what a source described as ‘inclement political climate’ in the country.
The decision is coming on the heels of pressures being mounted on him by leaders and faithful of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across the country. If he decides to seek a second mandate at the Aso Rock seat of power, President Jonathan will have unalloyed backing of the PDP Governors Forum (PDPGF) going by the stance of the 18 governors.

Following the release of the 2015 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, last January, Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi, told Vanguard that President Jonathan would soon hold a strategic meeting with his kitchen cabinet to decide on whether or not to run and take a decision this month.
Asked then if Jonathan would declare his ambition given that the INEC had released the election timetable, Obi said: “I want Nigerians to understand one thing. I have been on the side of the opposition for very long. Now, I am in the executive, current leadership. President Jonathan appealed to Nigerians and said he would not discuss politics until 2014.
Despite all the pressure mounted on him by the opposition to draw him into politics much earlier than 2014, he resisted it; he continued on the path of governance and maintained that he would say something in 2014. Now we are in 2014. INEC has spoken, we do expect that with all of these, I am sure he will sit with his kitchen cabinet and look at the pros and cons, what his administration has done and then take a position clearly on what his next line of action will be.”

Jonathan’s consultations: Apart from his kitchen cabinet, Vanguard gathered that President Jonathan has consulted stakeholders in most parts of the country, albeit discreetly, and received ‘a go ahead’ nod to seek re-election.
Indeed, the president has got support from stakeholders in most states and the six geo-political zones he has visited in recent times to receive opposition big shots defecting or returning to the PDP. The places he has visited include Sokoto, Owerri, Ilorin, Bauchi Kano and Enugu.

Blessings in disguise
With the endorsements the President is getting, pundits now see the November 17, 2013 defection of five PDP governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a blessing in disguise for the PDP and President Jonathan.
APC’s tsunami: When some PDP national leaders on the banner of the outlawed new PDP (nPDP) defected to the APC with five governors and 37 members of the House of Representatives with a threat to further deplete the ruling PDP, there were apprehensions that the PDP may not recover from the debilitating blow in one piece.

Then, the APC, which gained from the development, basked in the euphoria and hope of overthrowing the PDP in the National Assembly, especially in the lower chamber, become the majority party and possibly initiate impeachment proceedings against President Jonathan for his alleged ‘numerous impeachment offences’ and thereafter pave the way for APC’s victory at the 2015 polls.
The governors who left the PDP for the APC are Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Abdufattah Ahmed (Kwara). It was also rumoured that 22 PDP senators would defect to the APC in the first batch of the exercise. Although 11 PDP senators later wrote Senate President David Mark that they had defected to the APC, the move has not been perfected due to litigation.

Since the last November defections, the PDP appears to be emerging stronger from the setback. First, it got Alhaji Bamanga Tukur to step down as national chairman and former Governor of Bauchi; Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu emerged as his successor.
Incidentally, Mu’Azu’s acclaimed arch enemy in Bauchi politics, Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi nominated him for the post at the emergency National Executive Committee meeting of the party.

The collaboration between the national chairman and the PDPGF has so far been impressive. The expected series of defections seem to have been put at bay and the party still retains its majority in the Senate and House of Representatives. Also, the PDP got APC big wigs in the five states its governors decamped, which necessitated the president’s ‘tours,’ which the opposition has branded campaigning before the whistle is blown by INEC.

Behind PDP’s recovery: Faced with the growing decapitation of their political footholds, leaders of the PDP, backed by their remaining 18 governors on the banner of the PDPGF, rallied round to save the day.

A series of consultative meetings among the President, PDPGF Chairman, Obong Godswill Akpabio, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Tony Anenih and other stakeholders created a dramatic turn around in social cohesion and stability in the party.
If things remain unchanged, the PDP will go for its National Convention and presidential primaries as a united front and President Jonathan will have little or no problems picking the party’s presidential ticket.

It would have been a different kettle of fish, if the five governors and the aggrieved leaders did not defect to the APC, a reason some analysts see their departure as a blessing in disguise for the PDP.
Second term ticket
Currently, none of the PDP governors is angling for the presidency job. Most of them are interested in going to the Senate. None of them is against Jonathan re-contesting.

This is contrary to what prevailed in 2003 when former President Olusegun Obasanjo was seeking a second term ticket. Apart from then Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obasanjo faced a high hurdle erected by then PDP governors and federal lawmakers.
No hurdles: Jonathan is not expected to face such hurdles as the attention of the PDPGF appears focused on how to return him to office in 2015 given their stance at virtually all the zonal rallies held so far.
Akpabio, the PDPGF chairman, who often times spoke for his colleagues, had attended all the rallies so far, where he assured the president of their support to his administration and political future. Specifically, the governors have assured the president that they will back his re-election bid.

At the South-East zonal rally in Enugu, the PDP governors asked Jonathan to run. Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, said that the huge crowd at the rally showed the popularity of President Jonathan, whom he said remains the man to beat in 2015.
In like manner Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State said that the rally was meant to woo President Jonathan to contest the 2015 election because the people appreciate his laudable achievements in the South-East.

He said: “The essence of the rally is simple: our people want to present two requests. The first is that Mr. President, you should run for Presidency in 2015. Our second request is that he shouldn’t disappoint us by saying no. He must say yes! We aren’t here to discuss your projects, but to make that request with one voice.”
Endorsing Orji and Chime’s comments, Akpabio said that the PDP governors were united in making the demand and hope that the President would respond positively.

Akpabio said: “On behalf of the governors of PDP, we want to thank the governors of PDP in South-East. Mr. President, we want you to contest in 2015 and not to reject to contest. That’s our two requests.
They want you to complete the Second Niger Bridge. Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe completed the first Niger Bridge and another Azikiwe has started the Second Niger Bridge; they don’t want another person to complete it.
“Again, the International Airport in Enugu, they are worried that if you don’t contest, who will complete that project? The only person who can do that is the son of the South-East: Azikiwe Jonathan. They are assuring you that come 2015; they are going to reclaim that South-East state in the hand of the opposition that is Imo State.”
Lending his voice, Chief Anenih told the governors that the President would respond at the appropriate time. Describing himself as an advocate of a rancour-free primary process in the PDP, Anenih advocated a situation whereby the incumbent President would be granted a right of first refusal.

“In 2015, we shall come again to seek for your votes. The governors have asked the President to say, yes; the opportunity will come very soon. When INEC lifts the ban on campaigns, we shall bring him here and he will give a response to your request,” he said.
Will Jonathan yield to the pressure to run? Will the PDPGF maintain their support till the end? These are questions that will be answered with time.

We Stand Ready To Help In Any Meaningful way- General Muhammadu Buhari

My op-ed on the Nyanya bomb blast and the fight against terror as appeared in today's Daily Trust.

Sinister terror and hatred have again reached from the shadows to steal the lives of innocent Nigerians. In Nyanya, seventy-two people were killed by a car bomb. Hundreds more were injured in the devastation.

Their killings serve no purpose except for those who exalt in evil. The bomb blast quickly came and went like the deadly thief it was; but we shall be left to endure the pain and loss from this terrible act for a long time to come.

What the nation lost is irreplaceable. The number 72 seems like just another grim tally among the death statistics that have become all too common. But what occurred is much more than that. We must really stop and take notice of where evil is attempting to drive us to.

The abduction of over one hundred school girls is unacceptable, condemnable and saddens me greatly. We cannot allow these merchants of death to make us numb to the tragedy they manufacture. Those who were killed were not merely numbers on a page. They were human beings, made of flesh and blood, body and soul like all the rest of us. They were someone’s father or mother, brother or sister. They had parents; they were someone’s child. They were husbands or wives, neighboring friends and colleague. They had dreams and hopes. They were loved and loved others in return.

Now, life has been taken away and those who cared from them must bear a grief no person should be asked to carry. These people committed no wrong. Their only crime was to be ordinary working class people seeking to eke out a livelihood and tend for themselves and their families. For this, they were killed. They represent the backbone of the working people. Not many of them lived an easy life. Most worked hard and long for
modest wages. They lifted themselves up every morning to earn their daily bread. They faced the many social and economic challenges and obstacles our society poses, yet they worked not to destroy but to make this a better place by bettering the lives of their family and loved ones.

These people lived anonymously and died the same way. We do not yet know their names. But, in a fundamental sense, we know who they were. They were part of us. They shared the same aspirations we all do. We seek an improved fate for our children and hope to leave them a better life. We want to work and live in dignity and respect. We want a life of peace and harmony with our neighbors regardless of religion, ethnicity or background. We seek prosperity not poverty. We seek brotherly understanding not strife. We seek peace, not bombs.

It was not just 72 people who were taken in this depraved assault. Each of us lost something that day. Yet, despite the loss and suffering, we must not cower in fear, and let the purveyors of death believe they have scored a victory over us.

Those who committed this act have declared war on all that is decent and good. They have declared war not against the state or even the government. They have declared war on Nigeria and all Nigerians because this murder took men and women, old and young, Christian and Muslim alike. In trying to scare, frighten and divide us, the evildoers committed injury to their own cause.

For they have shown us that we all suffer inhumanity in the same way. No matter our religion or place of birth, we all bleed and are wounded the same way by injustice. Decency runs through the teachings of each religion and ethnic group that comprise the people of Nigeria. We may have our differences, but the vast majority of Nigerians stand united against the appalling violence committed in Nyanya and other places.

These acts have no place in Nigeria. Those who commit them have no place in our country. The perpetrators may look like human beings. They may have limbs and faces like the rest of us but they are not like us. In killing innocent people, they have become inhuman. They live outside the scope of humanity. Their mother is carnage and their father is cruelty.

They have declared war against the people of Nigeria. They have shown that they do not want to liberate the people. They want to kill them.
Yet, with all the energy of their evil and ignorant hatred, they shall fail. The good people of Nigeria shall triumph. Such a wicked mission shall not succeed. We have gone too far in our journey to nationhood and endured too much to allow these terrible acts to divert us.

Not only have these agents of death killed innocent people, they also abducted over 100 young women from their school. Why abduct school girls? Whatever they plan, they should be ready to face the wrath of Nigerian people. They should release these young girls unharmed. Anything else would be an abominable crime.

We all must take close heed at this moment and recognize the severity of what is upon us. A small minority seeks to bring the nation to its knees through terror. Thus, we must stand tall and united. We can ill afford to allow their crimes to go unpublished united.

I call on the government to improve and redefine its strategy in the light of this expanding menace. Clearly, its intelligence gathering needs to be improved so that it can break terrorist plots before they hatch.

Moreover, it needs to enact greater social and economic reform in the blighted areas of the nation to win the hearts and minds of the people. Give the youth a viable alternative and they will not be duped by the lure of extremist dogma. A major initiative with immediate and long-term strategies for mass employment should be introduced right away.

Nigeria must and will overcome this scourge but it cannot do so merely by wishful thinking. We need wise and decisive strategy. As for me and my party, we deplore and condemn these and all such attacks. Those who commit them must know that the nation stands four square against them.

While we are engaged in tight political competition against the ruling party, we shall not play politics on this issue so vital to our national survival and well being. We pledge ourselves to the unity and safety of this nation and shall do nothing to undermine national security. We seek no political advantage from this calamity and wish the present administration success in fighting it. We stand ready to help in any meaningful and productive way to fight this battle against evil. We extend our hand and earnest offer of cooperation in this regard.

Nigeria and Nigerians have suffered enough. Those who now lead the nation and those who would lead her must overlook political differences to find whatever ways we can cooperate to make this a safer, more secure nation for all.

Thank you and May God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

MATCH REPORT: ATLETICO MADRID 0 CHELSEA 0

MATCH REPORT: ATLETICO MADRID 0 CHELSEA 0

SummaryIt is all to play for in the second leg after a strong defensive performance from Chelsea ensured we are the first team to leave the Vicente Calderon undefeated in this season's Champions League.
With two of Europe's strongest rearguards in action, this was always likely to be a tight match and Chelsea's clean sheet was earned despite losing Petr Cech to injury early on and John Terry later in the game.
Atletico had the chances, and a couple of good ones were wasted, but it was solidness rather than luck that kept the Spaniards at bay.
Three midfielders - Frank Lampard and John Mikel Obi, plus Atletico captain Gabi will be suspended for the second leg.

Team NewsWith Branislav Ivanovic suspended tonight, Cesar Azpilicueta moved back to the right with Ashley Cole coming in for his first start since the FA Cup fourth round in late January.
Mikel was in the starting line-up for the first time since the FA Cup fifth round at Man City and played in a three-man defence with David Luiz and Lampard. Fernando Torres was at the centre of a three-man attack with Ramires and Willian.
Atletico dropped David Villa and brought in Diego to play with Diego Costa in attack. Arda Turan was fit but started on the bench with Raul Garcia and Koke the wingers. Former Chelsea man Tiago was also among the subs.
First halfThere was much interest to see the plan Jose Mourinho had worked out to counter the Spanish league leaders, and it soon became clear that with Atletico known for their threat from wide positions, Willian and Ramires were going to give plenty of support to our full-backs when we were without possession.
The first shot was from Diego in a central position, but was soft and deflected wide.
A cross from Filipe Luis was easy for Cech to claim and when a ball did drop for Diego Costa to half-volley, Terry was in front to block. Moments earlier the Atletico striker and the Chelsea captain had exchange words after a challenge.
The early pressure on the Chelsea backline was eased somewhat by a series of fouls given away by the home side, a couple of them sheer clumsiness. Mourinho's men then enjoyed a good short spell in possession to an increasing volumes of whistling from the home fans.
We were gaining a foothold in the game, but then on 17 minutes came a major setback. A corner from the left was swinging in on the target but was clearing the bar until Cech punched over. However it was at a cost as his landing was bad, and the medical team rushed on.
His game was over and after a few minutes of treatment he came off with what appeared a shoulder or arm injury. Mark Schwarzer, who had played for Fulham against Atletico in the Europa League final, came on. A Chelsea back five that had been unchanged for 13 games now had two personnel different.
Atletico v Chelsea

Up the other end of the Vicente Calderon pitch, a Lampard corner was met by Cahill but the whistle was blowing for a foul as it dropped wide anyway.
David Luiz, who was doing well breaking up the home side's moves, took a painful kick from Raul Garcia but was soon over it as Atletico continued to concede free-kicks near our penalty area.
Terry, who was having an outstanding game yet again, twice cleared as Atletico turned up the heat once more, the first time from a Diego Costa cross after the striker worked space past Cahill.
Atletico v Chelsea

But then on 27 minutes Chelsea broke for the first real time in the game, Willian slipping a tackle on halfway and sending Ramires into space on the right. The Brazilian's shot from an angle was wide of the far post.
Diego Costa headed over with Cole in close attention but Mourinho's men weren't allowing any easy chances. Atletico did go close on 34 minutes but it was from long-range, Mario Suarez's well-struck shot extending Schwarzer but flying just wide.
With five minutes to go to half-time, Azpilicueta threw himself in front to Diego Costa to block a shot after a cross had been flicked on. When Diego shot straight at Schwarzer in stoppage time and then Schwarzer claimed a cross well, we had reached the halfway point without conceding.
A foul on Torres in between those incidents earned a free-kick just outside the Atletico area. Hopes of grabbing a lead on the stroke of the interval evaporated when David Luiz's attempt was driven into the wall.
Second half
It was Lampard with the first shot after the restart but that was straight at Courtois, and the pattern of the game didn't change.
After a scrappy few minutes, punctuated by free-kicks, Cole was back to head behind for a corner and it had been clear throughout that the home fans fancied their chances from set-pieces such as these. On this occasion Schwarzer claimed it confidently and when the Australian did less well punching out in open play soon after, he raced back in time to field Diego's shot.
On 58 minutes, a Cole block tackle and then his run set us on the front foot and Torres skilfully snaked his way into range, but couldn't beat Courtois.
Atletico v Chelsea

Five minutes later, Lampard, who had just before been whistled up for handball, committed a foul near halfway that means he will miss the second leg. He was shown his third yellow card in this season's competition.

There was miscommunication between Schwarzer and Mikel as a ball came deep into our box but we escaped, and there was a feeling the home support were starting to become a little anxious about the lack of a breakthrough. They were certain increasingly annoyed by what they perceived to be Chelsea players needing treatment unnecessarily. They were proved wrong on that when after his second stoppage in quick succession, Terry had to come off with Schurrle on and David Luiz dropping back.
Still Chelsea bodies were there to block and challenge when Atletico got into our area. After a Chelsea foul, tempers frayed and Mikel and Atletico's Gabi were booked. Both will also miss next week's return.
Schwarzer paddled the free-kick that followed round the post before the Spaniards missed one of their best opportunities yet - Raul Garcia heading wide.
With three minutes left on the clock, Diego Costa reached a cross in the six-yard box but his on-target header was blocked by the head of Cahill, the defending typifying Chelsea's resolve at the back throughout.
Miranda was booked on 88 minutes for a foul on Torres just outside the area and as at the end of the first half, the chance was there for a late Chelsea goal, but this time David Luiz's free-kick cleared the bar.
As the final seconds ticked past, there were two wayward attempts from distance from the Spaniards and one worrying break after our corner that was eventually repelled before the whistle blew.

190 Schoolgirls Remain Missing, Not 77 – Principal - Politics - Nairaland

1) Some of the escapees with a parent (2) Weeping Governor Kashim Shettima and (3) Some of the abducted girls’ parents when Shettima visited Chibok...on Monday.

About 190 schoolgirls remain missing after being abducted last week by Boko Haram insurgents, their head teacher, Asabe Kwabura, told the British Broadcasting Corporation on Monday.

She said the parents of 230 girls had reported them missing but that 40 had managed to escape from the insurgents.

The 190 figure is far more than   the 77 given earlier by government officials.

The Associated Press had reported that parents of the pupils of Government Secondary School, Chibok told Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima when he visited on Monday, that 234 girls were abducted.

When news first emerged of the kidnap last Tuesday, initial reports said more than 200 students were abducted, but state officials said the correct figure was about 130.

The students, aged between 16 and 18 were about to sit their final year examinations when the insurgents invaded their school.

Kwabura told the BBC Hausa service that about 40 fled their captors.

“None of these girls was rescued by the military; they managed to escape on their own from their abductors,” she said.

Asked about the conflicting reports on the number of students kidnapped, she said: “Only reports that come from us is the truth and based on the register we have on paper.”

She had previously called on the kidnappers to “have mercy on the students”.

Before visiting Chibok on Monday, Shettima said that eight more girls had escaped over the weekend, meaning a total 52 had fled.

One of the parents, Shettima Haruna, told Shettima that they had been having sleepless nights since the incident happened.

He added that at a time, they summoned courage to visit Sambisa Forest to search for the missing girls.

The parent said, “We want to seize this opportunity to thank you (governor) for the visit and for identifying with us in this sorrowful moment; but   we want to emphasise  that we are not happy with this development. In  as much as we continue to pray for the safe return of our daughters, we are appealing to the  government and  security operatives to please intensify the search  for  our missing innocent children.”

Another parent, Mallam Amos Chiroma, said they saw a lot of strange things at the forest while searching for their daughters.

He said, “When we were in the bushes of Sambisa, we came across different make -shift camps suspected to be deserted by the insurgents.”

The parents of the abducted girls, who could not hold back tears, appealed to the government to ensure that their abducted girls were freed.

Our correspondent in Borno State, who was in Chibok, observed that most of the school buildings were totally burnt down by the insurgents.

Shettima, who was equally moved to tears, promised that his government would deploy all human and material resources towards rescuing the girls.

He said, “They can burn physical structures but they cannot destroy our souls.  Patient is the ultimate solution to the problem and I will ask us to have patience. We will soon get over this,”

The confusion over the numbers comes after the military last week said that all but eight of the pupils had been rescued before withdrawing its claim a day later.

•FG probing B’Haram’s links to Al-Shabab, Al-Qaeda
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has said it is looking into the links between the Boko Haram  and other international terror networks such as Al-Shabab and Al-Qaeda.

The Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, made this known while featuring on Channels Television programme monitored on Monday.

Obanikoro said the government had sought the cooperation of the international community in its bid to deal decisively with the Boko Haram menace.

He said that the successes recorded by security forces against the insurgents would  not have been possible without government’s consideration of the links between the  terror networks.

The minister said, “Seriously, we couldn’t have succeeded to this extent if that dimension was not considered. We are looking at that seriously and we are engaging the international community to ensure that that angle itself was dealt with.

“You know Al-Shabab, you know Al-Qaeda and you are aware of what had happened within our own area. We cannot isolate what happened in Mali from what is happening in Nigeria now.

“There is a lot to be done in terms of raising the standard of security along the borders, no doubt about that.”

The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Monday that Al-Shabab, which carried out the West Gate Mall attack in Kenya in September 2013, might have aided the Boko Haram attack on the Nyanya Motor Park near Abuja.

On the   abducted female students, the minister said   there should be an explanation for the reopening of their school which was closed by the Borno State Government.

•FG’s anti-terror war not convincing –APC

In Kwara State, the All Progressives Congress   called on the insurgents to free the abducted schoolgirls.

The party   also accused President Goodluck Jonathan of not genuinely interested in the welfare of Nigerians, especially the area that has to do with security.

The Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this known during the dedication of the multi-million naira St. Andrews’ Cathedral built by the Catholic Church in Irepodun Local Government Area.

The APC said recent statements credited to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party and the alleged actions of Jonathan were enough to convince members of the APC and other Nigerians that the PDP was not telling all it knew about the insurgency.

It said, “The statement credited to the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio, to the effect that President Jonathan should sack the three governors of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states is worrisome because it will give the PDP an advantage towards 2015.”

Nigeria food seasoning wars: Game of cubes.

Just last month (March) Promasidor formally launched the cube version of its highly popular Onga seasoning powder. Promasidor also used the event to introduce a power couple to act as brand ambassadors, talk about Kate Henshaw and Flavour N'abania. Nigeria Brand Police does not have exact figures of Onga's share of the Nigerian seasoning market, but we know they are somewhere around the top.

THIS MEANS WAR
Perhaps in response to Onga's fresh onslaught into the Nigerian food seasoning market, Nestle Nigeria also decided to fight back about a week ago by relaunching its very popular Maggi Chicken brand-the new Maggi Chicken.

Nestlé’s category business manager (Culinary), Guy Kellaway has said (during the launch) that the new Maggi Chicken has good aroma, colour, taste and flavour, saying the brand is available in cube and tablet formats for family consumption while in large 800g powder for caterers and restaurants.

“Maggi is all about innovation, constantly pleasing consumers, always one-step ahead of the game. We are very excited; it’s a new renovated cube, it provides the best colour, aroma and taste to all of your dishes. We encourage everyone to try it. Maggi is available in cube and tablet formats; it is already available for caterers and restaurants in large 800g powder format,” according to Kellaway.

Nestle Nigeria also paraded the celebrity duo of Toke Makinwa and comedian Bovi, both likely to act as brand ambassadors for the new Maggi Chicken.

Promasidor has already gone ahead to release an exciting, new Onga cube television commercial featuring Kate Henshaw and Flavour N'bania as lead characters. Nigeria Brand Police ‘likes’ the Onga cube TV Ad, with a few reservations. Read here HERE.

We are looking forward to the New Maggi Chicken’s Ad campaign plus television commercial; and it would be nice to see what talented comedian Bovi and beautiful TV personality Toke Makinwa will be bringing to the table.

Also, it would be interesting to see the media and marketing responses of other food seasoning brands like Royco, Benny, Doyin and the likes. Knorr has already cornered the reality TV show axis with 'Knorr taste quest'.

Imo Apc Chairman, Women Leader Dump Rochas - Politics

Imo APC Chairman, Marshal Okafor-Anyanwu has announced his resignation to newsmen in Owerri and said that he was compelled to quit as a result of undue and excessive government interference, usurpation of party authority, empty promises and lack of funding.

Hear the APC Chairman:
"I am leaving the party because it is not run based on ideology,it is more like a one man business, only one man has a say, he decides who gets what, where, how and when.
And if you dare ask why, you become his staunch enemy...so i can no longer remain a slave in the party. I and my supporters are leaving because we are no longer comfortable with the undirectional leadership of Rochas and we cannot be ambassadors of Idi Amin of Imo which Okorocha represents".

Lady Chidimma Akasike, the Women Leader, simply said she was frustrated out of the party.

Atletico Madrid Vs Chelsea Fc

Pre-Match

Date: Tuesday 22nd April 2014
Venue: Vicente Calderón Stadium, Madrid
Kick-off: 7:45
Referee: Jonas Erickson

Team News

Chelsea have been drawn against Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, while Real Madrid meet holders Bayern Munich.

Jose Mourinho's side will face the Spanish league leaders at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in the opening game before playing Diego Simeone's side at Stamford Bridge.

The draw has thrown up an intriguing talking point, with Chelsea reportedly wanting Atletico to pay them in order for on-loan Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to feature in the tie.
UEFA have released a statement insisting the Belgium international should be free to play in both matches and Chelsea CEO Ron Gourlay confirmed that would be the case, although he did not specify whether a fee would need to be agreed first.........continue

Atletico Madrid vs. Chelsea Preview

After both teams pulled off comeback wins in their quarterfinal rounds, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid now battle for a ticket to the 2014 UEFA Champions League finals.

Following a draw with rival Barcelona in the first leg, Atletico shut out its opponent in the second contest and advanced to the semis by virtue of Koke’s goal in the five-minute mark. Throughout the entire UEFA season, Madrid has won games with its defense. In 10 contests, the Diego Simeone-led club has not allowed an opponent to convert more than one goal.

However, Atletico will most likely be without Diego Costa, who is still nursing a hamstring injury. Costa leads his team with seven goals in the 2014 UEFA tourney. In his absence, someone else will need to step up, particularly Raul Garcia, who was scoreless in his lone appearance vs. Barca.

It’s also important for the squad to get off to a quick start. Atletico Madrid is 6-2-2 in UEFA matches where they’ve scored first this season.

Top ten banks in the world

There are several financial institutions that are reliable and there are others that try to do their best to complicate your life and get money from your pockets. Let’s see which are those financial institutions that will allow you to feel safe when operating with them and that represent the top 10 banks in the world.
1. Citibank
This financial institution first appeared in the 19th century in the city of New York. There’s no doubt that this is the most reliable bank on earth and that it has a great influence in the finance world. We can say that a city is not complete if there isn’t a Citibank branch in it. In the last couple of months the renowned bank has set up branches in several American cities.
2. JP Morgan Chase
This bank appeared a lot earlier than the Citibank and it has holdings of more than two trillion dollars. The financial institution is very popular with clients from all over the world including government offices, entrepreneurs or common people. JP Morgan Chase is worldwide famous for the services related to the credit cards they offer and also for their high-quality commercial banking.
3. HSBC
The first HSBC branch was founded twenty years ago in England, where it still has its head office. Forbes magazine tagged it as the biggest financial institution and enterprise on earth in 2011. This is a very successful bank in Asia, where it has staggering investments.
4. Bank of America
When it comes to the aggregate value of a company, the Bank of America seems to have to biggest on earth. The bank has branches in more than 120 cities of the world as a result of Merrill Lynch’s hard work. In the last couple of months, the bank has been offering amazing services for new investors. Some of the competition it has to face comes from Wells Fargo and Citigroup.
5. Credit Agricole Group
It has its head offices in France and it is world famous for the retail banking services it offers. Most Europeans think that Credit Agricole Group is probably the most important one in the banking world not only for the services they provide but also for their commitment to the environment, which customers really appreciate.
6. Royal Bank of Scotland
This financial institution has its head office and more than 650 branches primarily in Scotch territory. It is important to say that even when most Scotch people think that this financial institution has connections with the Bank of Scotland but that’s not real since the Bank of Scotland was founded some time before the Royal Bank.
7. Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group
This financial institution has its head office in Japanese territory and prides itself on holdings of approximately 1.8 trillion dollars. As the Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group joined together with another institution, their popularity has escalated even when the whole joint venture took some time to be finished.
8. Mizuho Financial Group
This is another financial institution with its head office in Tokyo. The Mizuho Financial Group is so popular that it has holdings for over 1 trillion dollars. This means that they have enough resources to be the biggest finance company in the list of top ten banks on earth. It provides traditional banking services as well as consultancy cheques and it has more than seventy thousand employees.
9. HBOS
HBOS belongs to the Lloyds Banking Group mainly because its department of insurance has demonstrated its remarkable capabilities every time it’s had to. The bank appeared in the early 2000s and it immediately started to be considered as one of the most important financial institutions in the United Kingdom. It is believed that the acronym HBOS stands for Halifax Bank of Scotland but that’s not certain.
10. BNP Paribas
This bank works not only in London but also in Paris. Forbes magazine claims that it has a privileged position in the list of twenty biggest enterprises on an international level. Apart from that, BNP Paribas possesses shares in different countries across the globe and it seems to be the most powerful. The bank was really lucky to get out of a crucial financial problem in the course of the American economic downturn.

Earth To D’banj: Forget Koko Garri, You’re Going Down Fast

D’banj may still be raking in millions of naira, but the quality of his music is giving fans and pundits cause for concern. YNaija attempts a diagnosis.

Let’s start with a simple question: When was the last time D’banj released a hit?

*crickets*

Exactly.

In the past two years of ‘silence’, the kokomaster has in fact released song after song. The problem? All have been uniformly dreadful.

A music manager who has worked with D’banj in the past, and asks to remain unnamed, puts it succinctly: “You know that there is a big problem when a musician begins to be known more for ‘kpo-kpo garri’ and his relationship with Genevieve or some desperate housewife in Atlanta, than for his music.”

Mr. Endowed

In February 2011, the remix of music superstar D’banj’s hit, Mr. Endowed burst onto the collective consciousness of Nigerians. In the accompanying video was his longtime collaborator, partner and friend, Don Jazzy, gently nodding and swaying, true to his style. Also present was ageless rap veteran and lackadaisical charmer, Snoop Dogg – who was christened OluwaSnoop – and who professed love for “my nephew D’banj from Nigeria”. Eja Nla (Yoruba for ‘big fish’), as the Nigerian would come to be known later, had landed himself a really big fish.

Everyone gushed about the alluring video vixen, the wad of dollar bills used as rolls of toilet paper and how good the trio looked together. It would go on to be the definitive moment for D’banj’s international career which blossomed after the release of Oliver Twist, the single that would go on to become a UK Top Ten hit the next summer.

D’banj eventually became the first home-based superstar. His success was a deviation from the model adopted by artistes such Asa and Nneka who migrated abroad to flourish, having been empowered by the enabling atmosphere of their new base. Here was a made-in-Naija boy who had grown in leaps and bounds, his success fuelled by the tenacity to survive the jungle that is the Nigerian music industry.

In June 2011, after months of speculations and rumours, rapper and agent provocateur Kanye West signed both Don Jazzy & D’banj to G.O.O.D Music. The latter featured in the label’s compilation EP, Cruel Summer, making a cameo appearance even in the video for Mercy, alongside fellow label mates Pusha T, Big Sean and of course West. Furthermore, fans were treated to a surprise appearance from Yeezy at the Koko concert in London. With the unprecedented success of the Oliver Twist single and the announcement of international deals, first with Mercury Island Records and then Sony Music, it seemed like D’banj had finally struck gold. Nothing could possibly go wrong. Or could it?

A G.O.O.D man’s worth

The kokomaster’s success had an expiry date, it seems. The magic that truly captivated everyone – from designer Giuseppe Zanotti who once sent him a custom-built pair of sneakers, to reality TV star Kenya Moore who allegedly paid $40,000 to have D’banj pose as her boyfriend – is withering away. His recent singles have not been as infectious as their predecessors were and since Oliver Twist, not one has been as big a hit as any of those released in the era of the defunct Mo’Hits. Even G.O.O.D Music, it seems, has parted ways with the flamboyant entertainer.

In his two years’ with the label, there was neither a tour with Kanye nor a major collaboration.
There was the forgettable track with Big Sean and Pusha T who performed in Nigeria, the sub-par verses from Yeezy himself on the Scapegoat remix and vocal credits of a line or less on the Cruel Summer EP. Save for those and the Yeezy cameos – at the London Koko concert and in the Oliver Twist video – D’banj seemed to be on the label’s roster only in name.

Was the deal worth the hype? Should D’banj have listened to advice from partner Don Jazzy and strengthened his hold on the home front before attempting to break new grounds in the US?

“Looking back, it almost seems like it was a huge publicity stunt because there is really nothing to show for it”, argues Arinze Obikili, US-based blogger and founder of Jaguda.com. “When you compare it with 2face who collaborated with T-Pain, and featured on another song with him and Akon,” explains Arinze who is known in Nigerian social media circles as Aribaba, “and Wizkid who is rumored to be on a song with Young Jeezy and The Game, you see that D’banj pretty much wasted two good years with Kanye, going for something that he could have attempted by himself”.

After all the fanfare that greeted his G.O.O.D signing, what might have informed Kanye’s decision to drop him from the label; so soon and without any recognizable impact? Aribaba theorizes: “I think it was a business decision. Perhaps he thought that the US wasn’t ready for mainstream African music or that he had overestimated D’banj’s value. Seeing as most of the artistes signed to G.O.O.D Music have great singing or rapping skills, and D’banj has neither, he probably thought it wasn’t worth the effort trying to force him down the US audience’s throat or figure out what to do with him. What would’ve been ideal is if Don Jazzy stayed. In that case, Don Jazzy would’ve worked with D’banj, and the G.O.O.D Music brand would have been the package around what they would have done to sell to the US market”.

Foladele Falana, an entertainment journalist with TV Continental, questions the motive for the signing. “Our excitement about the whole deal was in vain,” she muses. “I don’t see that he was noticeably more successful with them than when he wasn’t. It shows that you don’t even need to be signed to an international record label to make it”.

Nothing more for Oliver Twist

His away form has trailed him back home, as the story is no different; a number of mediocre singles have been released under his newly established DB Records since his marriage to Kanye and the end of the defunct Mo’Hits. D’Kings Men, a compilation album on his new label got a mention in the New York Times, but was nevertheless less than stellar. Furthermore, his usually high performance ratings have been inconsistent – there was the lacklustre performance in Zimbabwe where he was booed off stage as he ran out of popular songs to perform. Raise Your Glasses, the Hennessy Artistry song has not fared well. His single, Bother You, for the soundtrack of the film adaptation of Half of a Yellow Sun is as cheesy as it is unspectacular, with ThisDay writer, Ayodeji Rotinwa commenting: “Were I not judging it per its mesh with the movie, I’d call it a fine piece of sonic rubbish. I daresay it even falls under D’banj’s customarily low standards.” Indeed, save for that octane-level verse on the groovy remix of Naeto C’s Tony Montana, nothing new from the kokomaster has really stuck.

The Koko Music Empire is on the verge of disintegration and its head honcho has turned to his business ventures to save face, launching products as random and diverse as garri and mobile phones. It doesn’t end there, however. According to a reliable industry source, D’banj literally begged to be featured on songs by KCee and up-comer Burna Boy (Emmah and Won Da Mo respectively) to ‘stay relevant’ in the industry. Both acts established themselves as A-list stars in the three years in which Eja Nla bustled back and forth between Nigeria, the UK and the US.

When begging did not work, he resorted to other means, as was the case with Blame It on the Money, a track which was supposedly ‘bought’ from Durella. Both men released their versions successively, confusing the public and causing fans to debate on ownership of the song. Furthermore, he unsuccessfully attempted to sign Durella, Olamide and other artistes, going as far as authorizing misleading press releases. Eventually, he ended up with DeeVee and 2Kriss, who are yet to release official singles on the label, and his brother Kayswitch.

Mo’Hits to No Hits

It stings to think that things were not always like this. Once, D’banj was the undisputed king in an arena where his touch was the major and telling contribution, rather than the minor one. After returning to Nigeria from a sojourn to the UK in the 2000s, he began a joint effort which was named Mo’Hits Records. It was one of the first modern labels around, challenging the monopoly of Kennis Records, with D’banj as the lead act.

Not since Fela Kuti had another performer so wonderfully captivated fans with his energetic performances on stage. While both men weren’t abundantly blessed in the vocals department, their dexterity with instruments was a common denominator. Fela was a saxophonist who could play other instruments, while D’banj brought fame to the harmonica. And while the one had Tony Allen, the other had Don Jazzy.

He branded himself as the quintessential showman with major input from his partner who was styled in the manner of a Sicilian mafia don; getting credit and loyalty, but speaking only when necessary. They were an instant hit with fans across Nigeria and soon enough, the rest of the African continent.

“They were like 5 and 6,” reminisces Nkem Okafor, another blogger. “It was a partnership like never before and they complemented each other so well, they could almost pass for brothers”. This chemistry was reflected in songs like Tongolo, Why Me and in the Curriculum Vitae and Entertainer albums which showcased them at the peak of their partnership. Among those also signed to the label were their siblings, KaySwitch and D’Prince, who would remain at the periphery for years, as the crew rotated around the two henchmen and another signing, Wande Coal.

Good things don’t last forever however, and so their partnership and by extension, friendship came to a poignant end. As with everyone who gets a whiff of success, D’banj was thirsty for more. After the initial frenzy that greeted the duo’s international signing, the cracks began to appear. Eventually, they split, citing irreconcilable differences and betrayals. That may have signaled the descent of D’banj’s creativity, because while Don Jazzy has since set up Mavin Records and begun lending his beats and those lovable hoarse vocals to various hits, all his estranged partner has is a list of near-misses.

The life and times of Daniel Anderson

What went wrong? “Looking back, one is tempted to say that maybe D’banj should never have rushed to sign with Kanye West,” says Aribaba. “Musically, he hasn’t been the same since he jumped ship to G.O.O.D Music”.

D’banj also fired his longtime manager, Bankuli over an internal disagreement and signed on Mr. Tony Nwakalor, former manager of both Olamide and Tonto Dikeh. With a reputation for being overly arrogant, perhaps it was a perfect alignment.

Arrogance is widely known as one of the former Mo’Hits front man’s traits, and in the period after his G.O.O.D Music deal, his ego grew accordingly. In the grand scheme of things, D’banj’s personal quirks may not count for much, but it disenfranchised the public and was likely one of the factors that caused the change in his music fortunes soon after his G.O.O.D Music deal. First, the name on his social media accounts was changed in May 2012 to Daniel Banjo Anderson, a name he confirmed during an interview at Choice FM, London. It was immediately assumed that he had acquired a superiority complex and the new identity was an attempt to distance himself from his Nigerian roots. The bashing on Twitter only increased when his Nigerian name returned to his bio and he claimed that he had been hacked.

Tempers rose again in December of that year, when he apologized, albeit sarcastically, for making fans walk several kilometers through the sands of Eko Atlantic Beach to attend his Koko Concert (lightheartedly nicknamed the Koko Trek). He was forced to apologize again on Twitter, properly this time, citing overwhelming logistical failures as the reason for the trek.

His lack of a producer has also been advanced as the main reason for his musical misfortunes. Since losing Don Jazzy, the kokomaster’s usual coordination and delivery has been missing. The Jay Sleek-produced Oyato came surprisingly close, but still lacked the production genius the singer has been used to. He employed the services of DeeVee, a young producer signed onto his label, but the formula is still lacking the ‘magic’ element.

An Abuja-based DJ speaking on condition of anonymity expressed his view: “That guy is finished without a producer like Don Baba J. Most of those who call themselves producers today are just beat makers. Don Jazzy tailors the beat to your strength and even he can’t blend with some artistes.”

Falana agrees. “I don’t think D’banj will ever be as great an artist without Don Jazzy or Mo’Hits as he was with them. I’ve never thought he really had much substance as an artist, but being the beast that he is, Don Jazzy was able to make him look good. Plus they had good chemistry so they were a powerful duo. They were made for each other,” she concludes.

Reunion & Rebirth

The general notion is that if they were made for each other, then they can find each other again. Last year, both men were pictured working in the studio, alongside Maybach Music artiste, Wale and Olamide. It prompted speculations that a reunion which would be mutually beneficial for both parties could be underway. Popular OAP and brother-in-law to D’banj, Dotun Orekoya alluded to this in a recent interview, saying “I believe that something might happen. The love is still there, no doubt about it, and they have done music together regardless of whatever they are doing. They are actually good in their own different industries. It is entertainment and there is nothing we can’t see.”

Falana, obviously disappointed with the split, says, “D’banj is just everywhere. Homie should just come back home. Mo’Hits is the answer to whatever he’s looking for up and down. And frankly, I think the Mavins might be missing some D’banj flavour”.

Others flat out disagree.

“People keep speaking of this false equivalence,” says music critic Emmanuel Osanedum. “But it’s nonsense really. This is the truth: in the same period within which D’banj released the ironically titled Don’t tell me nonsense and others, all flops, Don Jazzy has owned the market.”

Indeed, Osanedum may have a point. From Tiwa Savage’s ‘Eminado’ to ‘Surulere’, the single which has become a viral sensation, there is no gainsaying that when it comes to music D’banj is no match for his former producer.

Getting back together?

Critics have argued that it might be hard for the ‘ailing’ superstar to survive for the next decade in the music business without descending into the dredges of obscurity. An A&R for a popular Nigerian music label posits that this may not be the case. “Even though I’ve questioned his relevance as an artiste a lot lately, I realize that we Nigerian listeners love ‘unserious’ music and D’banj is just that. He is no conscious artiste trying to save the world through music, so for that reason, he’ll probably last – if he has the right team behind him”.

“What keeps a musician famous and relevant is not all these celebrity moves – it is the hit songs that keep the engine of fame running. Ask 2face, ask Psquare,” said John Okonedo, a self-confessed audiophile and student at the University of Lagos. “Unfortunately, D’banj’s head is so far up his Bottom that he might not even see how fast he has gone into darkness”.

That, we think, is the real tragedy, because the kokomaster’s talent, well managed, is truly in a class of its own.

The 5 Types Of Men Who Make Great Husbands

In my line of work, I meet a lot of great husbands and the wives who adore them. Over time, it's not hard to pick up on a pattern among these men -- especially when I chat with other wives about why they chose the men they've married and what qualities in their husbands have most shaped their marriages. For all those single women out there who often wonder what type of man they should marry or how they will know if he's "The One" they're meant to spend forever with, this list is 100 percent for you. It's based on my own personal experience as a wife, those of the many wives I've encountered throughout my career as a Weddings and Relationships editor, and the observations I've made about the great husbands I've met or bumped into over the years. Not all of the answers are here, but I promise you, this list has some of the insight you seek. Read on, ladies, and take notes.

1. The Provider
He puts family first, always. He's a selfless man, who lives to please those he cares most about. He's the kind of man who can work two jobs in his sleep, always has a side-hustle in mind to earn more money, and guards his savings with his life. He can't rest until he knows the ones he loves are okay. He strives for perfection at home and in the office. Work-life balance is very important to him, but if missing time with his loved ones means a better life for them, he's always game to put in the overtime and take one for the team. Words like "no," "can't," and "impossible," are just not in his vocabulary, and when he hears others use them, it only increases his devotion to the task at hand.

Why He Makes a Good Husband: Marriage is the start of a new family -- your family. You will both want to provide for the family you create together, and it's imperative that you are partners with the same goals in mind. That said, there will be times when one person just cannot do as much as the marriage (or family) requires -- such is life. Marrying a natural-born provider will be a huge plus when the scales in your marriage tip, as they inevitably will at different points along your path.

2. The Rock
At your weakest moments, his strength keeps you stable and inspires you to push through. He isn't immune to pain or frustration, but he does handle it well, and he knows how to pull himself out of low places. He's the kind of man who never misses your call when he knows you need to get something off your chest, or better, just a friend to be there for you. Speaking of chests, his is always there for you to lean on, squeeze, and find comfort in when it feels like only a hug will do.
Why He Makes a Good Husband: He's loyal, devoted, and a true pillar in the world of the woman he loves. This is the perfect recipe for a loving husband that you can count on through thick and thin; what woman doesn't dream of marrying one of those?

3. The Critical Thinker
There isn't a problem, big or small, that he isn't itching to solve. He's a quick, solid, thinker, who hates to be backed into a corner. He doesn't just see the problem in front of him; he sees a road map of the many solutions available to him and takes his time as he determines the best way to get there, or the course of action he must take. He is patient, because he has to be -- rushing things is rarely the answer and he knows this. He's diligent, focused, and considers himself a mental Olympian of sorts.

Why He Makes a Good Husband: Marriage is truly beautiful, but it comes with its share of problems, and its rough patches. Happier times aren't always just around the bend -- getting there may require a detailed plan and thinking smarter, not harder. He will make a great team player during the moments where the only way to win is to work together, and trust me, those moments can and will arise in marriage.

4. The Believer
When the world around him comes crumbling down and the sun seems as if it will never rise again, this man still believes -- his faith is his foundation. It gets him through the good and the bad, and it never falters. He believes in the things unseen and those that many give up on when the world turns cold: hope, morals, kindness, and good will. He has a church home, or a religious mainstay in his life and the fellowship refuels his engines. He's God-fearing (whoever his God) and he's proud of his strong beliefs. His moral compass is always turned in a positive direction, and he refuses to accept failure. He helps others and chooses to live his life in a way he believes others should live theirs.

Why He Makes a Good Husband: This man has the emotional tools needed in his toolbox to repair many of the cracks and dents that will inevitably appear in any marriage. He's a fighter, and he will fight with you and for your marriage. He won't give up, even when you do.

5. The Free Spirit
Spending time with this man never gets old. He believes that life is about living and therefore is virtually immune to the physical afflictions caused by stress and worry. It's not that he doesn't feel those emotions; he just refuses to let them consume him. He stays positive and seeks to enjoy all aspects of his life, as much as humanly possible. He has most likely chosen a career he loves over one that pays all the bills. Therefore he's just as passionate about his work as he can be about feeding his cravings for new adventures. He enjoys traveling and most likely has a bucket list at least a quarter complete. He doesn't believe in wasting time worrying about what can't happen and prefers to shift his focus to what can. With him, there's never a dull moment at home, in the bedroom, or when you're out and about. His inner light shines through and warms the spirits of those around him. He keeps life exciting -- almost as if, each day he presses the refresh button.

Why He Makes a Good Husband: Spending the rest of your life with the same person, doing many of the same things can be as boring or as exciting as you make it. Marrying this man ensures that one pitfall your marriage won't ever fall into is that of pure and utter boredom. It sounds simple, but it's so important.
